What is trigonometry? • Trigonometry started as the computational component for geometry. • It includes methods and functions for computing the sides and angles of triangles.
When and where did trig start? • Trigonometry began with the Babylonians and the Egyptians. • The Greeks turned trig into what it is today.
Who discovered trig? • Trigonometry apparently began with Hipparchus of Nicaea (180 – 125 B.C.E.). • Hipparchus made many advances in astronomy. • He is also credited with writing the first table of chords. • He wrote 12 books about chords in a circle, which was the first known work of trigonometry.
How can trig be used in the real world? • Astronomy – to calculate the distance between stars • Architecture – to find the height and angle of buildings, and to figure out how much labor is needed • Sound engineering – to develop computer music • Aviation – pilots need to know the angle for taking off and landing
Trig Functions • The 3 most used functions are Sine, Cosine, and Tangent. • The other 3 functions are Cosecant, Secant, and Cotangent. • All of these functions are related because they are all one side of the triangle divided by the other. • These functions are all individual buttons on calculators.
The unit circle • The unit circle is a circle that has a radius of 1. • It is used in trigonometry to directly measure sine, cosine, and tangent. • Circles and triangles are related because triangles can be measured inside circles.
Interesting website • http://www.mathsisfun.com/algebra/trigonometry.html • it has some neat interactive graphs and it explains things very well
Art with trig project • Use at least 6 trigonometric functions over a certain domain to create symmetry. • Use graphing calculator to figure out how the function graphs interlace. • Graph the symmetrical functions on oversized paper, and color certain domains and ranges different colors.
