  5. Who is he? • Tohil is a Fire, Sun and Rain God and patron god of the K'iche. •  Tohil was also related with mountains and was a god of war, sacrifice and sustenance.

  6. What is K'iche? • K'iche'  are a Native American people, one of the Maya ethnic groups. • The highland K'iche' states in the pre-Columbian era are associated with the end of Maya civilisation.

  7. What was he believed to do? • Only Tohil was capable of making fire, which he made by drilling with his one leg. • It is believed that the god gave them fire to keep them warm and in return Tohil accepted human sacrifice.

  8. Tohils rituals and temples • In the PopolVuh, Tohil demands blood offerings from his worshippers, so the Maya offered to him not only their own blood, but also the blood of captives from war. • The words used to describe this is to suckle. • Tohil suckles blood by having the victims' hearts torn out.

  9. Tohilstemples • The largest temple of Tohil was at the ancient Quiche capital of Gumarcaj (Rotten Cane). • Another large Tohil temple was located at the Maya capital of Utatlan.
