Where do you stand and what do you need to work on? Look at your essay folder 1. What have you scored on your essays? 2. What are areas you need to work on? 3. What do you think you can do to fix these errors?
Where do you stand and what do you need to work on? • Basic Level 1-2 Essay • Some task are missing. • Include very simple facts and examples and some documents (1-2). • No outside information. • What you need to work on • Try using the pre-write to organize your essay. • Use the topic sentences to set up each new paragraph. • Incorporate the lifelines to support your documents (add outside information).
Where do you stand and what do you need to work on? • Intermediate Level 3-4 Essay • Address all the task . • Provides both descriptive and analytical examples (includes all documents). • Some outside information. • What you need to work on: • Need more ANALYSIS (used the life line to help you organize your response. (Think about why is this important). • Add analysis starters and answer those questions. • Need more outside information with facts and examples to back your documents. • Proofread- use the error and fixes chart to revise your essay and look for errors.
Where do you stand and what do you need to work on? • Advanced- Level 5 Essays • Includes all parts of levels 1-4 • Using the Lifelines focusing on strong analysis and incorporating many fact and examples from outside of the documents. • What you need to work on: • 1. Make sure you are consistent and can make this happen again on the regents.
Structures and Organizers • Direction: On your desk are the following organizers to help you with your essay. Select as many as you need to help you write the essay. Reminder: refer to the list above for what is suggested for your level of writing. • Pre-Write • Topic Sentence • Error and Fixes • Lifelines- use the ones from the last class • Analysis Words
Pre- Write Organizer/ Lifelines Purpose: This helps you set up the essay so that you do not miss any tasks and include all necessary documents and outside information. How do I use it: Fill out the organizer using information from the class and documents. Then just write your essay, all the information is in the organizer. Note: Use either the pre-write organizers or lifeline. Which ever you like better. You only need to use 1.
Topic Sentences Purpose: This helps you to set up the first sentence for each new paragraph. The point of the topic sentence is to inform your reader of what they will be reading about. How do I use it: Fill out the organizer with the topic for each paragraph. This organizer will help you to see where to place topic sentences. Use the topic sentence to start each new paragraph.
Errors and Fixes to your Thematic Essay Purpose: This helps you to target your proofreading for specific error. It also gives you suggestions to fix those errors. How do I use it: After completing your essay use the error and fixes organizer to help you look for any mistakes in your essay.
Analysis Words Purpose: This helps you to examine and improve the analysis component of your essay. The more analysis you provide in the essay the higher you will score. How do I use it: You can use this while writing the essay or after completing the essay. 1) Make sure you have incorporated the analysis format into your essay (what does analysis look like?). 2) Add in one or two analysis signal words into your essay and use that as a prompt to add more analysis information. 3) Review the steps for analysis- did you follow it and does your essay answer those questions?
