Guess What?!?!? You’re Gonna Be A Senior Next Year!!!!!
It’s Time To Begin To Prepare For Life After High School Graduation…
Will You Be Going To… A 4-year Or 2-year College Or A Technical/Trade School Or The Military Or An Apprenticeship
If You Plan To Go To A 4-year College There Are Some Things You Need To Do.SOON.
First, take one or both college entrance tests, the ACT and/or the SAT.
Nope! This year’s ACT costs $43.00 and this years’ SAT costs $41.50 BUT…if you have financial need, fee waivers are available.
Second, this coming summer, visit colleges and narrow your choices to 3 schools.
If you plan to attend a 2-year college or trade school, do you need to take the ACT or SAT?
It never hurts to take the ACT or SAT, but 2-year colleges and trade schools don’t require either.
Students in the top 10% • If you are in the top 10% of your graduating class you have automatic admission to any public university in Texas. • The colleges use the rank that you have at the end of your junior year to determine if you are in the top 10%.
Teacher Recommendations • Most scholarship applications and many college applications ask for teacher/counselor recommendations. • First, be sure the person writing the letter likes you and will give you a good recommendation. • Next, and most important: Give the person writing the recommendation at least 2 – 3 weeks to write the letter.
Always Make Copies • When applying for a college, a scholarship, or for financial aid make copies of all documents. • First, make a copy of the document so that you can use it as a practice copy. Neatness is important when filling out these papers. • After you complete the paperwork be sure and make a copy for your files. Papers can get lost in the mail or misplaced at the college.
Scholarship Scams • During your senior year you will be contacted by several companies claiming that they can find you money for college. These companies charge you money for services that are free. • Some companies charge fees to help students fill out the Free Application for Financial Aid. The colleges help you fill out this form at no charge. • Tell these companies that you are not interested!
College Night In September every year Irving sponsors a College Night. Over 150 colleges and trade schools attend this event. You will be getting information on this program at the beginning of next year. This is one opportunity you do not want to miss. You will be able to talk to representatives from many different colleges and trade schools.
Rising Star Program • If you have an 80 average and meet the parent income eligibility requirement you can attend any Dallas Community College for two years FREE!!!!!! • We have had many Nimitz students save a lot of money by attending the community college for 2 years free through the Rising Star and then going on to their 4 year school. • You must apply during the Spring of your senior year and fill out a financial aid form. Be sure and ask your counselor about the RISING STAR PROGRAM!
Junior/Senior Exemptions Juniors and Seniors who have two or less absences in a class and who have an 85 average or better do not have to take the semester and exam and do not have to attend that class on the day of the semester exam.
