PUB SIGNS • It is thought that the first pub signs in England may have been introduced by the Romans. • In 1393 King Richard II decreed that pubs must have signs so that the examiner or tester of ales would know the location of each pub. The pictorial sign was developed in the times when the vast majority of the population were illiterate and needed something large, simple and bright to recognise. • The derivation of inn signs and names can be a fascinating subject to research. Much of Britain's history can be found on inn signs, be it something of national importance or perhaps just a little known local incident. Many famous and not so famous people, real and fictional, have had inns named after them as have battles, ships, sports, animals and professions. The subject mater seems endless.
