The Carbonization of the Plant Hyacinths Speakers:217 13, 22 teacher:許慶文(Xu Qingwen)
Objectives • Study the carbonization of the Hyacinths to find out factors affecting the process. • Search for better ways to enlarge pore size of the activated carbon produced from the plant to improve its commercial value in application.
Apparatus & Materials • 1: water hyacinth • 2: pyrolysis machine • 3: aluminum foil • 4: petri dishes • 5: burette • 6: beakers • 7: tea bags • 8: phenolphthalein • 9: CH3cooH
Procedures 1. Preparation of hyacinth samples 2. Conditions for carbonization (1) 500 degrees Celsius 2 hours vs. 5 hours (2) 550 degrees Celsius 2 hours vs. 5 hours (3) 600 degrees Celsius 2 hours vs. 5 hours 3. Examination of the absorption of CH3cooH (Can you put pictures here to show the steps?) Results The hyacinth sample converts into strong carbon after heated at 500 degrees Celsius for five hours than the sample that is heated at 600 degrees Celsius for two hours. Experiment 1: Combined effect of time and temperature in the carbonization
Experiment 2: the effect of active surface and chemical treatment • Methods • 1. Increase active surface of the activated carbon produced from the plant by crashing • 2. Soak the produced carbon in the acid. (Insert pictures, please)
Future Research • Test the carbonization from other plants which has the porousnature. 2. Explore other factors influencing the efficiency of the activated carbon produced in the absorption of CH3cooH.
