  7. Levels of Learning • Knowledge level or ROTE learning • Understanding level • Applications level • Psycho-motor or Research level • Ideally, in high school class student should be exposed to all these levels • In higher education, learner should be in level 3 and 4 • +1, +2 classes are to bridge and equip the learner for research level activity

  11. Forces of Change • A Changing World • The Knowledge Explosion • Globalization • High Performance Workplace • Diversity • Technological Change • Knowledge Transfer Forces on the University Economics Societal Needs Technology Markets We cannot ignore the changing world around us and the demand for a proper response from the University level institutions

  12. The Future of the University? • “Thirty years from now the big university campuses will be relics. Universities won’t survive. It is as large a change as when we first got the printed book.”– Peter Drucker • “If you believe that an institution that has survived for a millennium cannot disappear in just a few decades, just ask yourself what has happened to the family farm.” – William Wulf • “I wonder at times if we are not like the dinosaurs, looking up at the sky at the approaching comet and wondering whether it has an implication for our future.”– Frank Rhodes

  13. Why Research ?? • Why Research is considered an integral component of Higher Education ? • The world is changing rapidly. The magnitude of the change is beyond our imagination. • This is an era of intellectual capital. As a nation, state and as a society we have to be extremely vigilant and committed resolutely to exploit the opportunities emerging from the challenges as we enter this new era

  14. Why Research ?? • An educational institution primarily Deals with knowledge. What distinguishes a first rate institution from an ordinary /mediocre one is the intellectual and academic ambience that exists there. This is something that cannot be brought from outside, but has to be carefully generated and sustained by all the stakeholders within the institution itself through conscious efforts. • Three important functions of an ideal Higher Education Institution are: • Creation of knowledge • Transmission of knowledge • Utilisation of knowledge

  15. Why Research ?? • There is an urgent need for the mobilisation and maximum possible use of our talents and capabilities towards creation of knowledge relevant to our needs and challenges if we are to establish our supremacy in the knowledge or intellectual era

  16. Research Excellence is within your reach, if you can : • ...risk more than others think is safe; • ...dream more than others think is practical; • ...expect more than others think is possible.” • ...care more than others think is wise;

  17. Traditional Roles of a University Teaching & Scholarship Educating the Young Seeking Truth and Creating New Knowledge Sustaining and Propagating Culture and Values Serving as a Social Critic Sustaining Academic Disciplines and Professions Critical Thinking Analysis and Problem Solving Moral Reasoning and Judgment

  18. The Traditional Roles of the University • Economic Development (Agriculture, Industry, etc.) Technology Transfer Health Care Teaching and Scholarship Entertainment (Arts, Sports) National Defense International Development

  19. Research should be relevant to society • For science, the research should be more related to technology and industrial applications relevant to the society • For humanities , arts , literature and commerce there are a large number of socially relevant issues that could be undertaken for the study/research

  27. Prototypical U.S. Industry …in 10 years if all goes well

  28. How to carry out quality Research? • With a high level of motivation from the teacher’s side ? • With the limited resources available?? • Even with the limited time at our disposal?

  29. Planning A Research Project • What is my expertise? • Area/subject of ct activity • What is project objective?? • What is the problem I am going to solve through this project?? • What is the relevance of this project for the society ??

  30. Planning A Research Project • What is the new knowledge this project can generate? • What is your justification for convincing the funding agency to support your project idea? • Are the resources needed to carry out the project available ?? • …….. And many more questions you can think!

  31. Planning A Research Project • Project goals & objectives • Literature survey • Methods • Resources needed • Collaborations for interdisciplinary interactions • Analysis of data • Arriving at logical results/conclusions • Significance of the results and knowledge generated

  32. Challenges in Higher Education QUALITY & QUANTITY • Enrollment: Around 12% ( in US >70%) • NKC targets: 15% by 2015 ; 20% by 2020 • Quality of higher education: ??? • Needs urgent strategies for real improvement quality of higher education

  33. Higher Education Should Generate Talents for Innovation • Creativity is the Most Important Thing We Can Teach Our Children in the New Millennium • Higher Education plus R&D is a recipe for a knowledge based and innovation driven economy!

  36. What worked yesterday won’t or may not work today • Yesterday - seniority signified status • Today - Creativity drive status Institutions should be the breeding centers of creativity • Yesterday - Production determined availability • Today - Competitiveness is the key Competitiveness in institutions is powered only by the motto: Teaching-Research-Teaching • Yesterday- Value was extra • Today- Value is everything How valuable the products of our institutions are ?

  37. Journey to excellence through Research • Creating the strong link between academic activities of the institution and research possibilities is the next step in the journey to excellence • For all subjects of study, setting up this linkage is most important • Research and Development is essential in an institution and is regarded as a symbol of achievements in knowledge creation.

  38. We have to fight our own attitudes !! • Every faculty member has a unique role to play in taking up this great challenge for academic and research excellence with their expertise in specific areas • But the world around us is doing their best day and night to make us remain as we are today. • We have to fight our own attitudes, our discouraging situations and overcome scarcity of resources to be different from others and reach heights of excellence through innovative research

  39. How to reach the top of research excellence in institutions? • Identify research areas of strength for the institution • Identify interested faculty members from each Department to form a working committee to plan research initiatives and sponsored projects with a committed leader • Identify thrust areas for project activity in their respective fields and possible interdisciplinary areas

  40. THANK YOU !!

  41. Thank you very much for your patience !!!

  42. How to design a research project ? Any research project should have following important points to be considered when a project is designed; • What is the problem we are going to solve through this project ? • What is the methodology for the project activity? • How to generate the relevant information to find a solution for the problem • What is the project activity in detail ? • How will the project be executed? ……….

  43. How to design a research project ? • How will the results be analyzed to generate the solution to the issue • What are the resources needed ? • How much is the fund required for the project ? • What is the expertise/resources available at the institution to carry out the project successfully
