Mexico is a Producing Power and Exporter of Vegetables • Vegetables • The tenth world's largest producer in terms of volume • The fourth largest exporter • Main supplier of the continent, producer of more than 70 varieties of these kind of crops 2006-2010 Period • Volume of vegetable production reached 10,806,000 tons annual average • It had a growth of 8.6% compared with the average of the period 2000-2006 • The average annual production of vegetables is 38,183,680,000 pesos, equivalent to the GDP of countries such as Togo in Africa and Barbados in America • Facts • Two of every five tons are produced in Sinaloa • Zacatecas and Chihuahua provide one in twenty, respectively • The vegetables represents 5% of national production and 16% of value • Three crops contribute more than half of the volume: green chili (21%), tomato (20%) and onion (11%).
Vegetables Facts - Green chili is second worldwide with 1.9 million tons, just below China and two times above the United States and Spain.- Mexico is the tenth largest producer of tomatoes in the world with a volume of 2 million tons; three times the production of Chile (850 thousand tons) and nearly four times the Argentinean production (707 thousand tons). Onion production puts the country in the thirteenth place in the world with 1.2 million tons, behind China and nearly twice that obtained by Argentina and Peru (650 thousand tons).In the last five years (2006-2010), green chili production grew 3% annual average, equivalent to 2.1 million tons per year. Two-thirds are produced by three entities: Sinaloa (27%), Chihuahua (23%) and Zacatecas (12%).The tomato reported an average annual production of 2.2 million tons, which translates into a growth rate of 2.1%. The main states are Sinaloa (30%), Baja California (10%) and Michoacán (7%). The onion registers a yearly growth rate of 1.3 million tonnes; highlight Chihuahua (16%), Baja California (16%) and Tamaulipas (11%).
The largest producers of citrus in the world Mexico is the fifth largest producer of citrus: one in twenty tons consumed in the world comes from our country. By product, the proportion is higher: one in ten tons of lemon (1.9 million tons); one in twenty tons of grapefruit (401 thousand); and 4.1 million of oranges are Mexican; our country ranks second, third and fifth in the production of these crops respectively. Mexico ranks thirteenth in the global production of tangerine and mandarin (513 thousand tons).
