The Lord’s Supper is a time of remembering a sacrifice. (11:23-27) • The Lord’s Supper is a time of re-examining servants. (11:28-32) • The Lord’s Supper is a time of renouncing selfishness. (11:33-34)
1. The Lord’s Supper requires an explanation. • (a) In taking of this bread and cup you are preaching a sermon: “proclaim the Lord’s death till He comes.” • (b) In taking this bread and cup you are painting a picture of Jesus’ broken body and shed blood. This is symbolic.
2. The Lord's Supper reveals an expectation. (a) You are declaring that you anticipate the physical return of Jesus Christ. “until He comes” (b) “Maranatha.” Words of greeting and the last words that rolled off the tongues of many martyrs.
3. The Lord’s Supper requires an examination. (a) We examine ourselves to be certain that we have placed our faith in Christ. 2 Corinthians 13:5; Matthew 7:21-23 (b) We examine ourselves to be sure that our sin is confessed and our fellowship is restored with both God and fellow believers. 1 John 1:9; Matthew 5:23-24
The Message of the Bread The Bread Tells of His Love Pastor: Luke 22:19 “And he took bread, gave thanks and broke it, and gave it to them, saying, “This is my body given for you; do this in remembrance of me.” People: Romans 5:8 “But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.”
The Message of the Bread The Bread tells of His Life Pastor: John 6:35a “Then Jesus declared, I am the bread of life.” People: John 6:35b “Whoever comes to me will never go hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty.”
All Reading Response: “Twas I that shed the sacred blood. I nailed Him to the tree; I crucified the Christ of God I joined the mockery.”
We are to see the Reflection of the Savior Luke 22:20 “In the same way, after the supper he took the cup, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in my blood, which is poured out for you.” The Message of the Cup
The Message of the Cup We are to see a reflection of ourselves. All read: Psalm 51:1-4 “Have mercy on me, O God, according to your unfailing love; according to your great compassion blot out my transgressions. Wash away all my iniquity and cleanse me from my sin. For I know my transgressions, and my sin is always before me. Against you, only, have I sinned and done what is evil in your sight.”
