Do Now: Page 187Copy down the vocabulary words • Propaganda- information/rumors spread by the govt. to promote its ideas • Rationing- system for limiting distribution of food, gasoline, supplies so military has what it needs • War Bonds- people invest money in U.S. to help pay for the war • Inflation- when prices rise because less items are available. Each dollar is worth less

  6. African Americans • “Double V campaign”- fight for democracy at home as well as abroad • Afr. Am can be soldiers (segregated forces) • 1941 Segregation in govt. agencies banned by Roosevelt • jobs to produce war goods (build aircraft, steel mills, shipyards) • Move North = competition for jobs & homes lead to race riots • http://www.pbs.org/thewar/detail_5373.htm

Consumers and Economy • Produce supplies and food for Allies • Businesses and Farm profit doubles • Unemployment drops & Salaries increase 135% • Rationing food/goods/materials to prevent inflation and to save for troops • i.e. bikinis, victory gardens • Conservation- recycle, reuse, plant victory gardens

  8. Women • 6 million men at war, women work • Women enter workforce to support war • “Rosie the Riveter” • Women’s confidence and income increase • Women’s Army Corps (WAC): Navy, Coastguard, Nurses. Support roles (secretaries, drivers, pilots, nurses)
