1st may in Pieniezno Hallowed be May 1
Like in most European countries in Poland the Labour Day has been celebrated on 1st May since 1890. The date was chosen 1st May to commemorate the workers’ strike in Chicago in 1886. In socialist Poland as well as in other socialist countries it was one of the most important national feasts. On that day, also called the Feast of Workers Class, big marches were organized where everyone had to be present. Marching people were greeted by party leaders. Trochę historii
The day before 1st May in the whole municipality people were taking part in so called community actions helping for example to build a road or doing other labours.
In those actions took part not only grownups but also children and youth.
During those celebrations medals and other prizes were given.
In Pieniężno the feast was celebrated on first days after theSecond World War – around the year 1945-46 together with shaping of socialist structures in Poland.
Everyone had to be present. Those who did not come were persecuted.
The most important element of celebrations was the march. It went through the most important places and main streets of every town.

Also children and youth were represented along with the scouts.
An inseparable element of celebrations was the parade stand for party leaders and town government.
The end of each march took place on the stadium.There speeches were delivered.
Afterwards there was time for sport competitions, dancing and musical groups
Święto 1 Maja w Polsce obecnie In Pieniężno the last May march took place in 1984. After the year 1989 the importance of the feast declined. At present it still is a feast (day off work) but people mainly spend it with family going for picnics particularly that the days off are prolonged and connected with another, even more important national feast – the Day of 3rd May Constitution.
