  4. Partner Questions: Defining Fear • Define “Fear” in this story. Who is fearful? Of What? Why? • What is symbolic in this story? What is ironic? • How might this situation also be a metaphor for South Africa’s system of Apartheid? What might Gordimer’s message to her reader’s be?

  5. Pass Book Assignment • Select two quotes (one for each panel) that embody rich, sensory detail. Quotes should reveal insight into the deeper meaning behind the story (fear, fear becoming reality, symbolism, etc). • Vividly recreate the quote (Gordimer’s language should paint a picture). Use color!!!
