Constructed Response is • a waste of time that teachers dislike doing • a waste of paper because kids don’t know what to write • a means to find out what students know about a concept • what we are going to work on today • all of the above Welcome to Formative Assessment!
Aligned to the MAP windows All grades participate in Winter and Spring (except 12th) Constructed Response Problems
Is the problem open ended? Does the problem have multiple entry points? Can you surface the multiple entry points? What do you expect students to do? Are there multiple pathways to find a correct answer? Considerations for creating a prompt
Examine the Instructional Guide for the important math to develop and assess in the MAP window. (See December CR grid) Come to consensus of understanding the math Explore resources for an open response item that could be adapted to assess the math that was identified. Create the Constructed Response item What’s the Math?
Create a Word document Catchy title/grade level Problem in 14 font (use Times New Roman) Line for answer ________________ Box for explaining student thinking Share with another team for feedback! Explain how the math is connected to the prompt. Revise as needed Making the CR item directions
Gather work from 2 – 3 classrooms for each CR No teaching of the math before the assessment is given. No “Think Alouds”. Consider getting work from current grade and the grade ahead for more diversity in work samples. (ex: 4th grade CR have 5th graders complete) Bring ALL the work samples to Nov 16 ACM meeting. Gather work samples
We need work samples from multiple schools! Teams will send blanks CRs to pruskelx@milw... Each ACM needs to gather samples of work for 2 different CRs grade levels (home school) Phone a friend. Share CRs with classroom teachers across the district. Send them a CR to try with their students and send completed CRs to us via interoffice mail by Nov 15. Share CR with ACM Listserv
Thanks for all your hard work today and in the future!
