  2. National park • A National Park is a special nature area that the National Government owns. • The aim of National Parks is to preserve the nature in the original condition as much as possible. • In Sweden we have 29 National Parks

  3. History Great forest fires in 1667, 1693 and 1831 have left their marks in Björnlandet. The last one mentioned was one of the biggest fires in Norrland. You can still see signs of charred stumps and scorch marks in the bark of living pine trees.

  4. Björnlandet National Park has always been wilderness, without any traces of permanent inhabitation. The area has although been used for fishing and hunting before. • Björnlandet is nowadays only used for reindeer grazing by the Lapps. The park is open for the public and you’re allowed to hunt moose and small game (hare, capercailzie, black grouse), but forbidden to fish. It’s also forbidden to somehow damage, destroy or disturb the nature.

  5. Rules • To think of when you’re in a National Park: • Don’t disturb the wildlife. Don’t bother grazing Reindeers. • Leave trees, bushes, lichens and flowers untouched. Dogs should be on a leash. • Motor vehicles are not permitted anywhere other than approved roads and parking areas.

  6. Vegetation • There is also broad-leaf trees and brushwood in the forest • In the wet forest there are many moisture loving plants like may lily, chickweed, twinflower and mosses. The wet forest is often draped in different kinds of lichens. The wet forest is often dominated by spruce. • The forests are dominated by pine. The oldest living trees in the forest is about 450 years old or older.

  7. Animallife You can meet a bear in Björnlandet.

  8. Foxes, hares and mouses have their homes in the forest.

  9. The animals • In Björnlandet live lynx, reindeer and moose.

  10. They are many birds in Björnlandet, like black grouse, golden eagle and rough legged buzzard.

  11. Threats • Björnlandet isn’t 100% safe from everything. Threats like littering, poaching and pollution could damage Björnlandet in several ways.

  12. Littering • Littering is the most dangerous threat to Björnlandet since it depends on our own actions. • Littering affects the wildlife and the environmental quality. • This is not what we want our forests to look like.
