What is a nation-state? • State = a recognized sovereign authority over a defined territory • nation = people with a common birth, ie., language and culture • a state defined by its people, with a common culture, not its ruling family or imperial conquests
Are all states today nation-states? • No • Andorra, Liechtenstein, Monaco, Channel Islands, Luxembourg, Malta, Singapore, Nauru, etc.
Do all nations have states? • No • Kurds, Palestinians, Sikhs, Scots, Catalans, Basques, Native American nations, etc.
Many of the world’s people have little national identification • other possibilities? • clan or tribe
other possibilities for non-national identification • ethnic identifications--for instance? • Chinese in South East Asia, etc. • language groups? • French Canadians, Walloons, etc. • religious groups? • Muslims in Philippines, Shia and Sunni in Iraq
How are nations cultivated or created? • institutions, transportation, education, media, ceremony and symbols
