Outline • Introduction • Motives for development, future work, roadmap etc. • Structure of project wrt NIS / IBM / NIE. • Version 6 Project – Key points • Roll-out plan, including training programmes, Maxdemo test (including full trial demanded from IBM), timescale. • Version 6 – The Highs & Lows • Maximo Mobile • Long term Strategy
Northern Ireland Electricity • NIE is part of the Viridian Group, owned by Arcapita. • Viridian turnover was £1022M in 2007, with NIE contributing regulated income of £166M. • NIE has sole responsibility for Transmission and Distribution of electricity to 790,000 customers in Northern Ireland. • NIE Infrastructure (the wires business) includes Customer Operations, Lines & Cables Product, and Plant Product.

Plant Product • Designs, constructs and maintains substations across Northern Ireland. • Installed network:- • 8 275/110 kV (with 3 new sites planned) • 40 110/33kV Substations • 210 33/11kV Substations • 8,500 Secondary Distribution (Ground Mounted) • Determines maintenance policy. Moving towards RCM / CBM policies and practices. • Maximo as Asset Register / Work Management system.
Maximo in Plant Product • Introduced as version 3 in 1997 to bring together Distribution data (up to 33kV) from 3 legacy databases. • Upgraded in 1999 for Y2K compliance to version 4. • Transmission data (110kV and 275kV) transferred from En Garde in 2002. • Integrated with Job Management System in 2004. • Delivered via Citrix in 2005. • Upgraded in 2008 to version 6.2.1. • …and much more to come!
NIE -Why upgrade to Version 6? • Requirements to comply with Legislative, regulatory and Auditory requirements. • Improved Substation Inspections and Defect Management • Maximo Version 4.0.1 unsupported • Increased Functionality • Condition based Maintenance • Image and Document Management • Workflow & Work Scheduling • Protection & Control • Dashboard

Version 6 Project • 3 stakeholders…NIE, IBM and Northgate Information Systems (NIS), the desktop provider for NIE. • Implemented in IE6 within a Citrix environment. • Circa. 50 users, across 7 locations. • ‘Train the trainer’ approach. NIS and NIE staff trained by IBM. NIE users then trained by NIE staff. • Rollout briefed across organisation. • Downtime limited to two working days.
Hardware Maximo Citrix Users Citrix Server Application Server Actuate Server Database Server
Configuration • Oracle triggers. Redefined in version 6, using Crossover Domains. • Training. Three sessions for every user, a sandpit, and post go-live handholding. • Actuate reporting. Conversion from Business Objects and Access. • Screen design. Fidelity with version 4, but also harnessing the additional features from version 6. • Organisational structure including user names.

Version 6 Roadmap V7 CBM Links Databases » Maximo Maximo Mobile / Defect Management
Roadmap Prioritisation • Legislative requirement? Are we obliged to deliver certain elements to comply with legislation? • Regulatory requirement? What information does the regulator demand from NIE? • Business benefit? • Promotion of Maximo? • Effort…do we need to employ IBM or an IBM partner? Do we need to employ NIS or other business partner? • Cost. Not just in financial terms, but in terms of resources.
Mobile Working • Approval and Sanction granted for Maximo Mobile • To replace 10,000 paper inspections per year. • 20 devices initially deployed, rising to 50. • Digital image collection, for immediate action on defects. • 3G infrastructure, backed up by docking as required. • Maps, diagrams, ISO procedures in the field. • May move towards GPS. • First pass removes clerical resource requirement of 1.5FTE.
TETRA Development • Terrestrial Trunked Radio (professional mobile radio and two way transceiver.) • Blue Light Services - Government Agencies and Emergency Response • Rolled out to Orange Light Services (utilities) • TETRA voice implemented in NIE 2007 • Used for all High Voltage Switching from site to Control centre • Intention to deploy Maximo via TETRA
Defect Management • Coded, rather than free text, output from Mobile. • Defects attached to relevant assets and locations. • Escalations and Workflow used to route defects to the relevant resource. • Where defects are not resolved, Maximo provides escalation through the organisation. • Visibility of defect issues not currently available, and some of these defects will be safety critical. • Longer term – integrated GIS to allow effective area working.

Conclusions • Maximo 6 provides significant ‘out of the box’ functionality improvements that can be easily accessed by the end user for quick and powerful gain. • Mobile working elevates basic inspection tasks to new levels. Defect capture, prioritisation and resolution all gain major improvements. • Maximo 6 provides the platform for true Condition Based Maintenance. It provides the ability to integrate Plant and the Asset Management system, to harness real-time condition information, allowing maintenance decisions to be focussed and cost-effective.
There are currently 20 upgrade projects to be implemented over the next three years NIE are keen to sign a 3 year framework contract to implement these 20 projects These projects will significantly improve Asset Management within NIE Expand Maximo to other parts of the business Long term Partnership
