AgShare Concept: A Key Pillar in the Development Process and Delivery of the Regional Graduate Training in International Infectious Disease Management University Distinguished Professor John B. Kaneene, DVM, MPH, PhD, FAES, FAVES Center for Comparative Epidemiology Michigan State University
PRESENTATION OUTLINE • What is AgShare? • AgShare Fundamental Principles • Where AgShare has been implemented • How does AgShare fit in the Delivery of the Regional Graduate Training in International Infectious Disease Management?
WHAT IS AGSHARE? • Open Education Resource (OER) is a process of creating education material resources that are open for sharing widely with interested individuals. • AgShareis the process of creating Agricultural (plant, animal resources, and animal health) OER.
AGSHARE FUNDAMENTAL PRINCIPLES • The AgShareOERscreated are being used to make improvements in the teaching of courses at Universities and the development of communities. • Graduate students serve as bridges between Universities and communities, and referred to as agents of change.
AGSHARE FUNDAMENTAL PRINCIPLES (cont.) 3. The research topics for the students are generated through consultation with University faculty and stake holders in the communities where the research will be conducted. 4. Graduate students conduct research in interdisciplinary groups.
AGSHARE FUNDAMENTAL PRINCIPLES (cont.) 5. The results of the students research are processed to meet the University requirements, used to improve teaching, and communicated back to the communities. 6. The results are converted into Open Education resources, and deposited at various sites accessible globally by all those interested.
WHERE AGSHARE HAS BEEN IMPLEMENTED • Makerere University • College of Veterinary Medicine, Animal Resources, and Bio-security • College of Agriculture • Moi University • US International Univeristy, Nairobi • HaramayaUniversity
AN EXAMPLE OF THE MAKERERE AGSHARE PROJECT Improving the Efficiency of the Dairy Value Chain through the Utilization of Open Education Resources in Uganda
OBJECTIVES • To develop a program to improve production and economic performance of dairy farmers. • To improve milk quality, and safety of milk and its products. • To control diseases affecting the quality and safety of milk (Mastitis and Brucellosis).
APPROACH Apply a dairy value chain with the resources of Makerere University, and using graduate students as agents of change.
BASELINE INDICATORS FOR EVALUATING PERFORMANCE Data relating to specific farm-level indicators of management, cattle health, milk production, milk processing, and agribusiness aspects of the farm enterprise were collected.

How does AgShare fit in the delivery of the Regional Graduate Training in International Infectious Disease Management?
1. Graduate training is a core aspect of the AgShare Concept. 2. Interdisciplinary research and training that is relevant to communities are a requirement.
Zoonoses and other infectious diseases that affect livestock and wildlife are emphasized. 4. Designing science-based interventions and evaluating their impacts on the economic development and health of communities are required.
CONCLUSION Given the aforementioned points, AgShare can serve as a key pillar in the Development Process and Delivery of the Regional Graduate Training in International Infectious Disease Management.
