VANITY OF THE MIND. “We are destroying speculations and every lofty thing raised up against the knowledge of God, and we are taking every thought captive to the obedience of Christ” (2 Cor. 10:5). “Vanity”. Not necessarily evil, just “vain” – worthless, shallow.

  1. VANITY OF THE MIND “We are destroying speculations and every lofty thing raised up against the knowledge of God, and we are taking every thought captive to the obedience of Christ” (2 Cor. 10:5).

  2. “Vanity” Not necessarily evil, just “vain” – worthless, shallow. We dream, fantasize, about being a great athlete, movie star, fabulously wealthy. Things aren’t going right at home…, Someone “knifed me in the back at work…” We live in our mind. But from the mind come, eventually, actions – “Watch over your heart with all diligence, For from it flow the springs of life” (Prov. 4:23).

  3. Power of the Mind (Heart) From streams to creeks to rivers to torrents. Gen. 6:5 Jeremiah 4:14 Psalm 19:14 The law of the Lord judges our thoughts: Heb. 4:12f; Acts 8:22 Matt. 5:22-26; 5:27ff W/o this, all religion is just bodily exercise.

  4. In What Does This Vanity Consist? A “passive” vanity. How long do your prayers last? Prov. 17:24; Acts 17:21 “Then sings my soul…” Control – from 26 letters we get all communication. Jesus distilled from life so many lessons: the sower, the mustard seed, lost coin…

  5. Positive Evil Follows “Speculative evil” – Rom. 13:14; 2 Sam. 15:4 “Ruminative evil” – Rom. 6:21; 1:32 Pride begins in the mind – Dan. 4:30; Luke 12:16ff; James 4:16

  6. How Do You Control Your Thoughts? Fill your heart with good – Matt. 12:34ff Good thoughts should fill our lives with good actions – “An idle mind is the devil’s workshop. Idle hands are the devil’s tools.” 2 Thess. 3:11; I Tim. 5:13 Look for the urgent thing – Mary and Martha – Luke 10:38ff

  7. Note the Scriptural Emphasis Rom. 12:1-2; 8:6-7; Eph. 4:23 Phil. 4:6-8 Have you fantasized about how you can serve God this week? About going to heaven? Is your heart filled with thanksgiving?
