Rifle The main weapon used by British soldiers in the trenches was the bolt-action rifle. 15 rounds could be fired in a minute and a person 1,400 meters away could be killed.
The Machine Gun WW1 Machine Guns had the firepower of 100 guns but needed at least 4 – 6 men to control them and had to be on a flat surface. Some machine guns, like the Field Gun had long range with a killer blow, but had to be controlled by at least 12 men.
Gas Warfare In the war, the Germans were the first to use chlorine gas as a weapon in the Battle of Ypres. Chlorine gas causes a burning sensation in the throat and causes chest pains. It’s a very painful death. But if the wind was blowing in your direction, it could end up killing your troops instead of your enemy’s.
Zeppelin (Blimp) The Zeppelin, also known as the blimp, was an airship used in the early parts of the war for bombing raids. It carried machine guns and bombs. However, was soon abandoned due to the size making it an easy target for enemies to open fire at.
The Tank Tanks were used for the first time ever in history, at the Battle of Somme. They were developed to face conditions in the Western Front. The first tank, called “Little Willie”, carried three men and went 3 miles per hour.
Airplanes Planes were also used for the first time in this war. At first, they were used for delivering bombs and spy work, but soon became fighter aircrafts armed with machine guns, bombs, and at the least chance, cannons. A fight between two planes became known as “Dogfights.”
Torpedoes Torpedoes were the bullets of the ocean, being used in submarines. Germany’s army used torpedoes to blow up ships carrying supplies from America to Britain. They did this with the famous ship explosion known as the Lusitania.
