Overview – NWS Operations Weather Forecast Offices • The Primary Weather Warning Agency • Provides Direct Weather Support to First Responders, Government Agencies, and Emergency Management • Issues Forecasts and Weather Information • Educate General Public to prepare for dangerous weather • Primary conduit to advance operational meteorology

  3. Overview – WFO Huntsville • 20 People on Staff • Includes forecasters, management, and support personnel • Office established in 2003 • Has become a leading office of the NWS: • Active Weather • Co-located with NASA/UAH • Engaged General Public • Strong Partners • Phenomenal Staff

  4. Air Quality Needs • We will want everything you can possibly give us.

  5. Air Quality Needs • On a typical day, a NWS office is asked about numerous weather and sky events. • We are expected to be experts in many areas – even if we aren’t. • The better information we have and the better training we get, the better we will serve your community.

  6. Why Local and not National? • You can do both. • All weather is local.

NO OTHER CHANGES MADE AT THIS TIME. WILL BE WATCHING FOR POSSIBLE VSBY UPDATES FOR TAF AT KMSL DUE TO SMOKE/HAZE...IF MIXING DOWN TO THE SFC OCCURS. &&

Examples HAZARDOUS WEATHER OUTLOOK NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE HUNTSVILLE AL 352 AM CDT THU MAY 31 2007 THIS HAZARDOUS WEATHER OUTLOOK IS FOR NORTH ALABAMA AND PORTIONS OF SOUTHERN MIDDLE TENNESSEE. .DAY ONE...TODAY AND TONIGHT... ANOTHER BOUT WITH SMOKE AND HAZE IS EXPECTED TODAY...WITH VISIBILITY DROPPING FROM 2 TO 4 MILES FOR A PERIOD THIS MORNING. PERSONS WITH HEALTH CONDITIONS SENSITIVE TO SMOKE SHOULD TAKE APPROPRIATE MEASURES TO PROTECT THEMSELVES. THE FIRE DANGER WILL BE SOMEWHAT LESS THAN IN RECENT DAYS DUE TO LIGHTER WIND FLOW AND A SLIGHT INCREASE IN MOISTURE.

  10. Future Uses - Forecasts Graphical Forecasts High Resolution Air Quality Grids… Help the public better understand air quality issues Increase public planning to mitigate AQ challenges

  11. Parting Thoughts • We cannot toss data to forecasters without training. • At best, the information will not be used • At worst, the information will be misused • We want to serve the public better then we do today. In the area of air quality, we cannot do it without your help.
