  2. Think and Ink Respond to the following quotation by answering each of the questions below: “There is no such thing as life without bloodshed. The notion that the species can be improved in some way, that everyone could live in harmony, is really a dangerous idea. Those who are afflicted with this notion are the first ones to give up their souls, their freedom. Your desire that it be that way will enslave you and make your life vacuous.” -Cormac McCarthy • Can you think of any specific literary evidence for this? • What do you think this means for the content of the book? • Do you agree/disagree?

  3. Vocabulary • Bildungsroman – a novel that revolves around a young protagonist’s development into a hero through episodic growth (a “coming-of-age” story) • Motif – a situation, incident, idea, or image that is repeated significantly in a literary work • Theme – central idea behind the story

  4. Bildungsroman AKA: Novel of formation, novel of education, or coming-of-age story Literary theme focusing on the psychological and moral growth of the protagonist from youth to adulthood • Protagonist engages in stages of the hero’s journey: separation, initiation and return • Boundaries and limits are tested through conflict • Loss of innocence occurs as a result of conflict and sacrifice

  5. Theme of “Sacred Violence” • Evil and violence are inescapable • No matter how peaceful or comfortable the appearance or situation, violence is always building under the surface. The theme of sacred violence has two components: • Human's innate affinity for violence/bloodshed • The futility of denying this affinity

  6. APH Journal Assignment • Read the assignment along with me • Save questions until the end
