7th Grade Preview • Students have the opportunity to take an extra elective class • 7th grade Fun Day is held at the end of the year • Students have the opportunity to try out for SGMS athletic teams
7th Grade Expectations • Now that students are adjusted to middle school, there are higher expectations which include: • Being role models for 6th graders • Being consistently on time for class • Respect for self, others and teachers at all times • Advocating for self and working hard to earn good grades

With leadership comes responsibility! Being a leader of the school means that you need to lead by example. As an eighth grade student, you should… • Set learning goals and determine how you will reach them. • Seek help as needed. • Advocate for yourself. • Take responsibility for your education.
Develop students who love math and see it as useful to solving problems and making sense of the world. • All students will reach proficiency in math – Understanding, Computing, Applying, Reasoning, and Engaging (UCARE). • Provide students the skills and option to take AP level math in high school. Advanced World Studies 7 • Thematic Units: Political Systems, Culture, Geography & Economics • Historical Focus: Medieval Europe, Africa, Mesoamerica, Renaissance • Advanced Skills: Categorizing Evidence, Generalizations, Multiple Sources, Document & Artifact Analysis, Point of View, Comparing Information, and Historical Writing (Thesis Statements & Multi-paragraph Essay)
Advanced U.S. History 8 • Multiple Themes Per Unit: Political Systems, Culture, Geography & Economics • Historical Focus: American Revolution, Constitution, Westward Expansion, Civil War & Reconstruction • Advanced Skills: Categorizing Evidence; Analyzing Sources for Content, Perspective, Corroboration & Context; Historical Interpretation; Identifying Patterns; Multiple Causation; Evaluating Evidence for Relevance; Historical Interpretation; and Writing (Thesis, Multi-Paragraph Essay, Persuasion, & Task Analysis)
Investigations in Science 7 • Hydroponics: Studentsdesign and construct a hydroponics system and monitor and maintain the chemical composition of the system • Chemistry of Life: Students develop a menu for a specified group that is balanced, nutritional and affordable • Diseases: Students develop a sample genetic counselor report to apply for an internship with Montgomery County Public Schools and the National Society of Genetic Counselors • Biotechnology: Students use microarray technology to process and analyze evidence collected at a crime scene to solve the case
Investigations in Earth Space Systems • Solar Energy & Fluid Circulation: Studentsdesign homes all over the world that utilize green resources and take into consideration the climate and weather in their part of the world • Astronomy: Students analyzing several Kepler mission findings for Earth like conditions • Restless Earth: Students create an interactive brochure highlighting five places in the world with interesting tectonic features • Earth’s Materials: Students determine the location of a below ground pool on SGMS school grounds by analyzing rock material • Earth’s History: Students design a newspaper with articles predicting what various locations on Earth will be like in the future
English • In 6th Grade, students are exposed to a number of literary and grammatical terms and concepts which make-up the English discipline. • In 7th and 8th grade, students take these concepts from the identification to the explanation, application, and analysis stages through a variety of assessments.
Reading • All Reading courses in 7th and 8th grades are Reading Intervention courses. • READ 180 provides students with intensive reading support in all the major areas of the reading process • Reading Advantage continues to provide students with instruction on the major reading strategies and various types of text.
Arts Electives-Semester Classes Family and Consumer Sciences (FACS) – Grade 7 Art 7 Applied Robotic Engineering and Computer Aided Drafting and Design ( CADD-ARE) – Grade 7 Food and Nutrition – Grade 8 Lights, Camera, Literacy (LCL) - Grade 8 Art 8 Introduction to Engineering and Design (IED) Grade 8 - a high school credit course

COURSE OFFERINGS • Spanish 1A/1B (over 2 semesters) • Spanish 2A/2B (over 2 semesters) • Spanish 3A/3B (over 2 semesters) • French 1A/1B (for 2 semesters) • French 2A/2B (for 2 semesters) • French 3A/3B (for 2 semesters) • Chinese 1A/1B (8th grade only) • To earn 1 high school credit towards graduation, students must pass both semesters and pass the semester exam.
Physical Educationand Health Students in middle school must take : 3 quarters of physical education 1 quarter of health education
Health Education • All students are required to take 9 weeks of Health Education. • Family Life and Human Sexuality and Disease Prevention and Control (FLHS/DPC) Units- parents must opt students into these sections. • There will be a Parent Information Meeting to review materials used during FLHS/DPC units.
Important Dates • Counselors met with students through Science classes – January 29th & 30th • Registration forms collected from all students – February 5th • First Day of School – August 25, 2014
