Getting to Know Today's Computer Computers have grown to become both economical and powerful.In 1998, the Gateway G6-450 was "top of the line", the fastest computer Gateway offered.the processor has become 4 times faster, the hard drive is over 20 times larger, and your mouse no longer needs a track ball that can get clogged up with dirt. Not only does the computers have all those improvements.
Hardware and software of the computer The motherboard is largest circuit board in your computer. It holds and connects all the important parts of your computer together.Internal Hard Drive stores your operating system, software programs, and many other files.The Processor attached to the motherboard, the main processor acts as the brains of your computer. R.A.M is where your computer places all your programs and applications that you currently have running. Expansion Slots and Cards are ports in your motherboard to which you can additional hardware.
Computer Connections Power Adapter In - This is where the power cord connects to the computer. DVI Video Output - This is a digital video connection that sends the signal to your monitor. It replaced the older analog VGA connection. Serial Port - This has been a popular port for many years because of its versatility. It has been used to connect the computer to just about every peripheral device on the market. USB 2.0 Ports - The Universal Serial Bus allows you to "daisy chain" several USB devices together, then connect them to your computer through just one connection. The latest USB standard (2.0) transfers data at the speedy rate of 480 Megabytes/sec. Parallel Printer Port - Commonly referred to as the "Printer Port", the Parallel Port will transfer data faster than the serial port. This port has been the connection of choice for connecting printers to computers for years. Even though many printers now connect to the computer via USB, some still use the Parallel Printer Port. 6-Ethernet/Network Jack - This is what high speed modems use when then connect to your computer. It is also how you are most likely connected to your network at your school, which in turn connects you to the Internet. • Line In Port - This is where you plug your computer's microphone in to record your voice. • 8-Speaker Out Port - Your computer's speakers and/or headphones plug into this port.
Computer Monitors & Displays Most common type of computer monitor in the past has been the CRT (Cathode-ray tube). These provide a quality display and have dominated the market since the beginning of the personal computer age. However, they use a lot of power, give off a lot of heat, and take up a lot of room. Taking more and more of the market share is the LCD (Liquid Crystal Display) Monitor. It is becoming more popular because it takes up less room and many feel it is easier on their eyes. Another flat panel design on the rise is Gas Plasma screens, they currently provide the largest screen area of all monitors, but are not cost effective, thus they are not widely used.

Computer Drives And Media DVD can hold 5GB of information, and was first broke into the market as a format from which to watch movies. USB Drive simply slides into one of your computer's USB ports, allowing you to save to it. When you are finished, you can just slide it out and it is small enough to fit in your pocket. Storage capacity on these d rives are constantly increasing. External Hard Drive connect to your computer via a USB or Firewire port and can store several Terabytes of data.
