How to Swing a Golf Club By: Austin Arquette
What We Are Going To Cover: • The Grip • Stance and Posture • The Swing • Weight Transfer & Follow Through
Materials Needed • A Golf Club, Driver or Iron will work (Putter will not) • Plenty of Space, Preferably Outside.
The Grip • Hold the club in your left hand. • Interlock the left hand pointer finger with the right hand pinky finger • Fold your right hand over the club and rest your right hand thumb on your right hand pointer finger • Note: Your grip should be firm but not chocking. Imagine you are holding a baby chick or a bird. You want to know that it is safely in your hands and it won’t go anywhere.
Stance & Posture • Feet should be a shoulder’s width apart • The right foot should slightly be more forward than the left foot (This will allow the swing to be more smooth) • Slightly bend your knees, and lean a little over your toes
The Swing Begin the swing. “Think Pendulum” • Begin the swing by pulling the club back. This should not be a rush or jerky motion. • Keep your arms and wrists straight. Swing as far back as possible until you’re forced to bend your elbows. • Continue to swing the club backwards, stopping when the club is parallel with the ground. • Then begin the down swing. The Top Swing, Club stays parallel
Weight Transfer & Follow Through The Weight should be on back foot (right foot) on the downswing. • Weight should be on front foot and slowly transfer to back foot during backswing. • When you begin the downswing, allow your hips to turn as your club begins the decent to the ball. Wrists should also start to turn (roll right wrist) • After contact has been made, turn or roll your wrists (This will help direct the ball to your target). • Let the club swing and the momentum will throw the club behind your back. Use your own strength to make sure it doesn’t hit you. • At the final stance the only body part that should have left the ground is your back foot. Weight is now on the front foot. Head following the ball, wrists turning with hips.
Finished Product • Now that the grip, stance and posture, swing, weight transfer and follow through are done, you’re on your way in becoming a better golfer The Swing is Complete
