  1. The Critical Thinking Process Analysis: Breaking a subject down into its parts in order to better understand that subject. i.e. Asking the following questions when reading an essay: Whois the narrator? Whatis the topic of the essay? Wheredoes it take place? Whendoes it take place? Whyis the author writing this essay Howis the author presenting their essay, methods used, style, tone, etc?

  2. The Critical Thinking Process Inference: Drawing conclusions about a subject based on your store of information, experience, your knowledge of the creator’s background and biases, and your analysis. Considering this making the implicit explicit. i.e. Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight has far less scenes taking place during daylight than its predecessor, Batman Begins. This seems to highlight the theme of darkness that Nolan conveys throughout the movie.

  3. The Critical Thinking Process Synthesis Using your perspective to link elements into a whole or to link two or more subjects under a common theme or relationship. i.e. After looking at all Christopher Nolan’s representations of Batman in Batman Begins and The Dark Knight, it is clear that he taks this character in a much darker, psychologically troubling direction than the previous Batman movies.

  4. The Critical Thinking Process Evaluation When you determine the adequacy, significance, and value of a subject. i.e. Considering previous Batman movies presented overly- exaggerated characters, Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight is a much higher quality movie because it offers a more realistic presentation of its characters.

  5. The Critical Thinking Process Visuals Understanding the persuasive power of visuals requires a close examination and interpretation of the premise, claims, details, supporting evidence, and stylistic touches. • Who is the target audience? • What are the claims being made? • What assumptions does the image make? • What is the supporting evidence? • How does composition affect the audience?
