Metric Length • Millimeter • Centimeter • Meter • 1000 millimeters = 1 meter • 100 centimeters = 1 meter • 10 millimeters = 1 Centimeter
Metric Volume (fluids) • Milliliter • Deciliter • Liter • 1 milliliter = 1 cubic centimeter • 10 deciliters = 1 liter • 1 liter = 1000 milliliters
Metric Weight • Microgram • Milligram • Gram • Kilogram • 1000 microgram = 1 milligram • 1 gram = 1000 milligrams • 1 kilogram = 1000 grams
Terms to know Gram measures mass or weight Liter measures volume or liquid Meter measures length or distance
More Terms to know Kilo (K) = thousands Deci (d) = tenths Centi (c) = hundredths Milli (m) = thousandths
Abbreviations Millimeter (mm) Centimeter (cm) Meter (m) Microgram (mcg) Milligram (mg) Gram (g) Kilogram (kg) Cubic Centimeter (cc) Milliliter (ml) Deciliter (dL) Liter (L)
Review • What are the three measurements we are looking for with our metric math? • Length • Volume for fluids • weight
Review If I have a measurement of 350m how many centimeters are there? If I have 2m how many millimeters do I have? If I have a weight of 4500mcg, how many milligrams do I have?
Review 1ml = ______cc 20dL = _______L 2.4L = ________ ml
How to read a ruler The ruler is divided up into 1/8 sections. The first line after the 1 is 1/8 the second line is ¼ the third line is 3/8, the fourth line is ½, the fifth line is 5/8 the sixth line is ¾, the seventh line is 7/8, and then finally the 1 inch mark.
How to read a ruler What was wrong with what I just said?
How to read a ruler We will use the top portion of the ruler. Notice all of the little lines are our millimeters and the larger lines are our centimeters. We are using metric measurements not standard.
