  1. Social Issues of Power Harvesting as Key Enables of WSN in Pervasive Computing J. Berzosa, J. Mabe, N.J. Grabham, M.J. tudor • This study is partially funded by European Union Seventh Framework Programme (FP7/2007-2013)

  2. Power Harvesting & Pervasive systems • WSNs are easily integrated into different environments. • Power Harvesting. • Avoid the use of physical maintenance. • Increase the life cycle virtually forever. • Power Harvesting techniques build potentially self-sufficient devices/systems.

  3. Power Harvesting VS Pervasive systems • Not reliable energy source. • Can affect the quality of the Pervasive Services. • Non deterministic energy source. • Not easily predictable and can not be foreseen. • Uncertain quality of services. • Difficult management of the energy resources can lead to service lost or unnecessary quality degradation. • Pervasive systems relay in a determined QoS. PH Implications

  4. Home Networks Challenges Adaptation of the Inhabitants No professional Administrator Change of social behaviours Disruption of the home environment routine As opposed to Workplaces or Lab environments Integration of the System Trust and Reliability Fulfilment of user expectations

  5. Power Harvesting and User awareness • Natural Integration into the environment MUST effectively deliver Services to the everyday routines Pervasive Systems MUST effectively integrate the Services AND the maintenance of the Services into everyday routines Power Harvesting Pervasive Systems • Users must be aware of: • The Services are not infallible if no further care is taken. • OR • The Services are optional or auxiliary.

  6. TIBUCON Project … • … is a solution for real time monitoring of building thermal conditions based on Self Powered Multi Magnitude WSNs.

  7. TIBUCON paradigm • Federated Network over an Unfederated space. Every single room is “owned” by a different person • Each person must be convinced about: • the technical solution • the maintenance routines • the necessity of a certain conditions

  8. TIBUCON Deployments • Test Deployment • Assumption of proper function • Partial trust in the solution • 22 apartments • No specific instructions • No immediate feedback User Answer • Future Deployment • Awareness of device’s dependability on energy source • Care for the device • Trust in the solution • 70-80 apartments • Maintenance instructions • Immediate feedback Expected User Answer

  9. BIG questions • What do current Power Harvesting techniques lack in order to be effectively applied to Pervasive Systems? • Will “user dependable” technologies get acceptance into homes?
