Aim: How can we learn about adjusting shadows and highlights in images? Unit: Correcting and Enhancing Digital Photographs
Making Shadow / Highlight Adjustments • Adjusting the shadow and highlight areas of an image allows you to bring out details in the image • The Shadow / Highlight command is suitable for correcting 8- or 16 – bit RGB, CYMK, or Lab photos • It works best when subjects are silhouetted against strong backlighting or are washed out from being too close to the flash • The adjustment is also useful for brightening areas of shadow in an otherwise well-lit image
Steps for Adjusting Shadow / Highlights • Open the 08 b start image • In the menu choose Image > Adjustments > Shadow / Highlight • Notice that Photoshop automatically applies the default settings, but we are going to customize them to bring out more detail in both the shadows and the highlights • We are going to also enhance the red sunset in the sky • Make sure that the preview box is checked so you can monitor the changes to the image
Steps for Adjusting Shadow / Highlights • In the Shadow/Highlight box check the show more options box and make the following adjustments: Shadows Area • Set the Amount to 80% • Set the Tonal Width to 65% • Leave radius at 30 pixels High Lights Area • Set Amount to 5% • Leave Tonal Width at 50% • Leave Radius at 30% Adjustments Area • Drag Color Correction Slider to +45
Steps for Adjusting Shadow / Highlights • Click Ok to accept the changes • Save your work in you folder (not in the portfolio)
