Natural Resources This unit will explore the question – WILL THE EARTH’S RESOURCES LAST?
EARTH • Earth is home to more than 6 billion people who rely on its resources. Food, water, energy, and all other human needs are supplied through the fragile balance of nature. Many of these resources are renewed by natural cycles, usually within a person’s lifetime. Other resources are non-renewable because they take millions of years to form.
Forests • Forests are an example of a renewable resource, and the forest industry is very important to Canada’s economy. • Clear cutting is the most popular method because of it is cost efficient, the cheapest and most profitable way to obtain the lumber. • Clear cutting is sharply criticized by environmentalists
Non-renewable Resources • Minerals are examples of non-renewable resources. The open –pit mining method is used in the huge oil sands project in northern Alberta. Much of the area is mined this way because each grain of sand is coated with oil and water.
Recycling • Recycling is just one solution to the problem of using up earth’s resources. • At present, only a very small portion of waste materials is recycled. • There are many methods to conserve by limiting the consumption of energy, water, and other resources. • However, environmentalists are concerned that people are taking too much without making enough effort to save resources for the future.
