eFolio : A DIY ePortfolio School of PsychologyiSolutions Dr Alex Furr eLearning consultant21st January 2010
Outline • The eFolio Project - background • The consultation /development process • Screenshots • Project Findings • Implementation suggestions
Do you use an portfolio system? • Pebble Pad • Mahara • Blackboard ePortfolio • Other purchased system • Other open source • Other ‘in house’ system • We do not currently use a portfolio system
ePortfolios at Southampton. A brief history • Pebblepad Pilot in 2006 n=19
Why? • Not entirely embedded in the curriculum – ‘superficial extra’ • Lack of university-wide clear vision or requirement • Alumni would have to pay to use it • Why did we look to implement a new one?
Project background • Psychology intranet contained many useful applications • eAssignments • Module outlines / information • Module student feedback • Opportunity to implement new system • LTEF Bid put forward(14k)
Project timeline ePortfolio pilot approved Funds released Release Consultation Development / Implementation 2009 February March April May June July August September October 2009
The Consultation • Goal – specification for the application • Questionnaire sent: • Deputy heads of Education (every School) • Student Services • School managers • Questions: • What do we want? • What do we have? • What do we need/can improve upon?
What did we want: Vision • Must integrate with existing key systems e.g. • New eSubmission application (JISC) • Document repositories (e.g. EdShare, ePrints) • Banner (Student records) • Must be sustainable / scalable • Accessible to alumni (Life Long Learning)
Do you give free access to your portfolio tool to alumni? • Yes • No • We don’t give access to alumni
If you don't, why not? • Cost • Technical / Security Issues • Other
Blackboard Wiki Blackboard Blog eSubmission systems (Psychology, Medicine, ECS etc…) Banner (Student records) Online Module Feedback e.g. Blackboard survey, iSurvey Careers service online Digital Items Existing Systems Feedback Feedback Photos Photos Assignments Assignments Evidence Evidence Video Video Achievements Achievements Blog / journal Blog / journal Qualifications Qualifications CV CV Skills Skills Reflection Reflection
What did we need? • A new off the shelf product would not work or be supported • Simply needed to bring together existing applications via a ‘portal’ • Open source software to ‘fill the gaps’
Portfolio element Bespoke solutions Open source solutions Skills/ competencies CV generator Blog TikiWiki Existing solutions Student / staff profiles and publications eAssignments VLE Module Information (Banner) File repository
Application built using PHP / mySQL (same as moodle) Iterative design with end users Development 16
‘Thinking Psychologically’ course • 1st year UG course (n=150) • Reflective blog – kept over the student life cycle • 3 posts • SMART goals, identify key skills and reflection • Final marks delivered using eAssignment system
Feedback from staff and students • “Very useful having all the information in place” • Wordpress Problems! (Learning Curve) • “The reflection assignments weren’t very useful” • “I didn't think the Reflective Journal helped me gain anything. “
Alumni take up • 7 students out of 150 • >5% take-up!
Future work • Cognitive Behavioural Therapy / School of Medicine (Yrs 1-3) • Skills / competencies feature • Working closely with Careers service / graduate passport • Identify other Schools who can use the portfolio • Track graduates and analyse portfolio use • Ensure key processes are capturedfor SLE project • Evangelise!
A DIY portfolio. What do we need? • 1 tech staff (.5 FTE 6 months) • 1 academic staff (0.2 FTE 6 months) • Willing guinea pigs (staff, students and admin) • Backing from key individuals! • Head of School • iSolutions management
DIY ePortfolio - Pros • Customisation • Integration with existing systems • E.g. JISC Assigment system • Survey tool for module feedback • Alumni cost no longer relevant
DIY ePortfolio - Cons • Open source <> free • Ongoing support • Improvements required • Cost of hardware (server etc) • No paid for support if things go wrong • Identify requirements up front!
Things to consider... • Do we actually need all elements within a portfolio?
Which of the following portfolio components are you currently using? • Blogs • eSubmission / marking • The 'portfolio' tool to showcase achievements / work • Wiki for group work • Skills / competencies tool • CV generator
Scenario 1 – Art College • Student portfolio in the traditional sense • Wordpress MU / 3.0 • Numerous gallery plugins • Flickr integration • Feedback via comments system
Scenario 2 – Medical School • Always difficult due to external staff engagement (NHS) • NHS portfolio system already exists • Central application might not work at all!
