  3. Nazi Power(1933-1939) • Hitler rises to power in Germany • He promotes ideas of German nationalism & racial hatred of the Jewish people

  5. KRISTALLNACHT“Night of Broken Glass” • In wave of German anger, Jewish businesses and homes are destroyed in 1938. • Major step in Nazi policy of Jewish persecution

  7. Ghettos (1939-1941) • Segregated & overcrowded areas that Jewish people were herded into. • Became transition areas before being sent to death/work camps • Dwellers were given ration cards (300 calories/day) • Ghettos were filthy with poor sanitation

  8. Approximately 450,000 people lived in the Warsaw ghetto in early 1941. At this time, the ghetto contained about 840 acres, of which 760 acres were habitable. The Final Solution • Hitler impatient (waiting for Jews to die of starvation too slow) • FINAL SOLUTION: a program of GENOCIDE—systemic killing of an entire people • To preserve “Aryan” purity, he targeted Jews, Gypsies, Poles & Russians. • In addition, others were targeted the insane, the disabled, incurably ill & homosexuals

  15. The Concentration Camps (1941-1942) • The camps were labor camps, death camps, transit camps, and prisoner-of-war camps. • The living conditions of all camps were brutal. • Prisoners worked 7 days a week with very little food & poor conditions

  16. The Final Stage: Mass Extermination • In 1942, Nazi death camps built equipped with gas chambers (6000/day) and crematoriums • SIX MILLION JEWISH PEOPLE DIED IN THE DEATH CAMPS
