  2. Ariel LaShaun Laws • Institution: Agnes Scott College • Major: Sociology and Anthropology • Minor: Education • Conducted independent research

  3. John Dewey “ Education is a social process. Education is growth. Education is, not a preparation for life; education is life itself.”

  5. Who will I be working with? • Mentor: Dr. Teresa Buchanan • Associate Professor for the Department of Curriculum, Educational Theory, Policy and Practice • Graduate student: Catherine Parker • PhD Student

  6. What is an Eco-Map? • As cited in Curry, Fazio-Griffith and Rohr an eco-map, “ is a technique that provides visual representation of individuals, groups, and organizations that are within a given environmental context.”

  7. Eco-Map Directions • Interview an Informant • Draw an Eco-map • Review/Analyze the drawing • Repeat the process for the child’s school

  8. Example Eco-Map

  9. The Purpose of my Research Project Is to determine if eco-mapping can be used as a valid and reliable research tool to measure children’s social support network.

  10. Theoretical Framework • Urie Bronfenbrener’s (1979) Ecological Framework • He shows how a child’s development depends on the context he or she is in

  11. Method • Quantitative Analysis • Data Coding • Analyzing Data

  12. Background Information • The project was funded by the Louisana State Board of Regents • Series of interviews of teachers, parents and children took place

  13. Primary Research question: Are eco-maps valid and reliable for educational research?

  14. Change happens now, and it starts with us!
