  1. Veganism By: Galena Baumann and Jaydin Grenier

  2. What is a Vegan? A vegan is a person (for various reasons) that avoids using or eating any animal products. Vegans don't eat flesh food, dairy, eggs, and other types of food that would come from an animal. Also they would not wear fur, leather or wool, and don’t use cosmetics/chemicals that are tested on animals.

  3. Whybecome a vegan? Most people become a vegan because they think the thought of hurting animals for their benefit is cruel. They might also do this to save animals’ lives, help the environment and maintain a healthy lifestyle.

  4. What are some of the benefits? Along with saving animals’ lives, becoming a vegan can produce many benefits. When you are a vegan you can reduce your risk of getting heart disease, colon and lung cancer, osteoporosis, diabetes, kidney disease hypertension, obesity, and many other types of health conditions. The main reason these medical conditions are reduced is because you take a lot of the fats and high cholesterol out of your diet and have high source in vitamins and minerals.

  5. What is a disadvantage of being a vegan? When you cut out most of the meat and milk from your diet you loose some nutrients. Most vegans are low in protein, calcium, and vitamin B12. If you don’t get these in your diet you could get very ill. Most vegans take vitamin supplement pills to get the nutrients they need. With these pills, vegans can be just as healthy as someone who consumes meats and dairy products.

  6. What can you eat? Some things you might consider eating if your were a vegan might be:Breakfast-Whole grain cereal (or granola with soy) with rice milk-Whole grain toast with jellySnacks- Sunflower or pumpkin seeds- Raisins, figs, dried apricots Beverages-Water-Fruit juices, with no artificial ingredients Lunch- Vegetarian hot dog- Peanut butter & jellyDinner- Pasta with tomato sauce- Tofu, tempeh, or Seitan stir fry

  7. Technology's impact on veganism When you hear the word vegan, you think of people that stay home and eat organic foods, but with today's technology vegans don’t have to stay in anymore. You can go to Taco Bell, Burger King, Subway and even more. Each of these places contain their own type of vegan food. To see what variety they have you could go to vegguide.org and see what you can have that everyone can enjoy. These places put much thought in to creating a recipe that everyone can enjoy. Also in the past decades they made a huge stride in finding new foods for vegans to eat. They have made vegan chocolate, margerine, and so much more (which contains no animal products). Without these types of foods vegans wouldn’t have the variety they have today. More than likely in the future scientists will develope a way for vegans to eat foods that they could never dream of eating without hurting an animal.

  8. How does Exercise have an Impact? As in every diet exercise plays an important role in keeping a healthy lifestyle. Even in a vegan diet you get both simple and complex carbohydrates. Without exercise these carbohydrates would turn into fat. With too much fat can lead to obesity and other health conditions. Exercise will also tone your muscles, and help you have a healthy active life for the future. Many people also believe that when you are a vegan it is harder to play sports, because of the shortage in protein in the body. This is completely false. You can play sports just as well if not even better than people who aren't vegans.

  9. How does being a vegan affect your diet? When you become a vegan you must always beware of what you eat. They must always check their food label to be positive that that food contains no animal produce. Also vegans have to stop drinking regular milk, and switch to a plant milk or almond mild. With not eating meat vegans lack protein. Most make this up by consuming veggie burgers, or tofu. This gives them the protein they need while sticking to not harming animals. If your body can not keep up with this change (not getting enough protein) you might need to take vitamin pills to keep your body regular.

  10. How will this affect your life? While learning about veganism we learn why people choose to become a vegan and some of the benefits that go with it. Not only is it save animals lives its helping chemicals stay out of the atmosphere. This will affect our lives, because when we meet someone that is a vegan we may have a better understanding of why they choose that lifestyle. We will also be able to create recipes that will include the criteria for veganism.

  11. What is the importance of dietary planning? Planning out your diet can help you stay healthy. This can help you make better decisions on what you eat. Planning will make sure you get all the vitamins and mineral that are necessary for an active and healthy life. Over all these changes may be difficult to keep track of, but if you can this will affect your future in a positive way.

  12. How will we apply what a healthy lifestyle to our own lives? We learned that exercise in anyone diet is an important part in maintaining a healthy body. No matter how well you can eat exercise will be a main way to burn off all the extra carbohydrates that you eat. Also we learned that if you don’t get the nutrient you need that you could get sick. If you don’t get what you need it doesn’t mean you have to eat foods that you don’t like, it could mean you have to take pills to stay healthy.

  13. How will this info help you in future recipes? We learned a lot that will help us have healthier choices when it comes to eating. In many cases you don’t have to be a vegan to make these choices to your diet. You can use applesauce instead of an egg. This will take out much of the cholesterol making it a better alternative. Tofu is a great choice if you want to get the protein you need, but less fat. These can be added to a recipe to make the meal more interesting and healthy.

  14. How does this lifestyle cause and effect having a healthy lifestyle? After reading through the many article we have determined that if you get the nutrients that you need, exercise, stick to your diet you can have a long healthy lifestyle. Taking out all the harsh chemicals and saturated fats can stop many hazardous health conditions. The foods that you most likely eat when you are a vegan contain many good vitamins and minerals. This will help keep the body in the best condition it can be.

  15. Celebrities That are Vegan • Carrie Anne Moss (From the Matrix trilogy) • Anthony Kiedis (Singer for the Red Hot Chili Peppers) • Coretta Scott King (MLK Jr. Wife) • Ed Degley Jr. (actor and environmentalist) • Ellen Degeneres (TV Personality) • Jason Marz (singer) • Ozzy Osbourne (musician) • Steve-O (stunt performer) • Weird Al Yankovic (Musician and comedian)

  16. Vegan Buckeyes Ingredients • 16oz Powdered Sugar • 1 cup Chunky Peanut Butter • 2/3 cups Vegan Margarine (softened) • 1/2 teaspoon Vanilla • 1 Bag vegan chocolate chips (or chopped up vegan chocolate) • 1/4 cup Vegetable Shortening • toothpicks Directions • Step 1 Combine first 4 ingredients and roll into balls. They should be somewhat firm so add more powdered sugar if needed. Then stick them in the freezer to help harden. • Step 2 Melt the chocolate and shortening in the microwave. (Be careful not to overcook the chocolate, which doesn't take too long.) • Step 3 Stick toothpicks in the peanut butter balls and dip them in the chocolate. Don't cover them entirely. You want to leave a little bit of the peanut butter exposed on top so they look like Buckeyes (the state nut in Ohio).
