  1. The Royal Law – v 8 • The idea begins in Leviticus 19:18 and climaxes with Jesus’ words in Matthew 22:35-40 (cf. 5:43-48). • Royal means: • It comes from God – thus to be obeyed • It is the highest of all commands • It describes what the King (Jesus) desires • It is the law of the Kingdom

  2. Royal Love • Jesus summed up God’s requirements for mankind in one word – love – broken down into two relationships – the vertical (God) and horizontal (mankind). • If we love others we will naturally fulfill all of God’s commands (cf. Rom 13:8-10; Gal 5:13-14). • Love is…(1 Cor 13:4-8) • God’s pattern (Eph 5:1-2) and pouring (Rom 5:5)

  3. The Royal Law Applied – vv 9-11 • If love is seeking the good of others then being partial (showing favoritism) is a sin. • “Their actions are not unfortunate or regrettable or something they should not have done, but sin. James is not afraid to use a stark, piercing word to underline the situation, for beating around the bush does not lead to repentance.” (Davids, 60) • The purpose of the law? Convict us of our sin.

  4. The Royal Law Applied – vv 9-11 • You break one, you break them all – vv 10-11 • Who wrote it? • So, if you violate one, what have you said about God and His standard? • Either we keep God’s standards or we don’t. We can’t pick and choose what we want (don’t murder) or don’t want (love your neighbor).

  5. The Royal Law as Judge – vv 12-13 • All that we do and say will be assessed by whether it was done in love – v 12 • “Law of liberty” • How can any law liberate us?! • The command to love frees us from ourselves to do what God created us to do – serve Him and others.

  6. The Royal Law as Judge – vv 12-13 • A loveless life will result in a lifeless eternity – v 13 • The one who shows no mercy demonstrates he has never received God’s mercy. • Cf. Mtt 6:14-15 ‘you do not forgive others…your Father will not forgive you’; Mtt 7:1-2 ‘the measure you use will be measured to you’; Mtt 18:22-25 • Mercy wins
