E N D
The Interface • A – Collection Panel • B – Document Panel • C and D – File type filters
What it can do for you • Create, build, view a collection • Assign metadata to documents in a collection • Create, modify and define various indices, classifiers and metadata sets • All of the available Greenstone plugins and their associated flags can be assigned without manually modifying the collect.cfg file • List items generated by classifiers and queries can be customized within the GLI • Generates metadata.xml files for your collection
What it can’t do for you • Customized Greenstone interface for your collection • Custom buttons • Automatic assignment of metadata to documents • Custom Plugins • Documents generation
Creating a new collection • File Menu -> New Menu Item • Description of content text area holds text that describe the collection in the Greenstone mainpage • Base this collection on combo box allows the user to create a new collection that uses the same metadata set, classifiers and plugins on a previous collection
Creating a new collection • Enrich, Design and Create tags are active after a collection is created or opened • The Metadata sets menu allows the user to edit/import/export metadata sets
Metadata sets • The menu items under Metadata sets menu are self explanatory so we will only focus on the edit menu item • Panel A displays the currently available Metadata sets • Create a new set by clicking on the Add button that is next to the “Set” label • Create a new element under set by clicking on the Add button that is next to the “Element” Label • If you want to use your own metadata set in other collections, be sure to export it
Enriching a collection • Move the collection documents to the import directory • Set the appropriate file filters in the Gather interface so that your source documents are listed in the right panel • Click on the Enrich tab • Select the appropriate documents to assign metadata values • Greenstone allows attributes to “accumulate” values, i.e. a single attribute can hold multiple values and they are displayed as a duplicate list item • Panel A lists all of the assignable metadata one can associate to document(s) in the current collection
Designing a collection (cont.) • Panel A lists the plugins that are used to parse the documents for the current collection. Details about plugins can be found in pages 75 – 76 of the User’s guide • The list box provides a comprehensive listing of all of the plugins • Assignment or removal of a plugin is as simple as the clicking of a button
Designing a collection (cont.) • Flags can be passed to a plugin to control its behavior • The Configure Plugin button allows the user to customize its behavior from the Configuring Arguments dialog box
Designing a collection (cont.) • Indices can be assigned to different metadata at the document , paragraph and section level
Designing a collection (cont.) • The user can add/remove/configure classifiers directly using the GLI interface • The Configure Classifier button brings up a dialog box that is similar to the Plugin Configuring Arguments dialog box
Designing a collection (cont.) • User can assign specific formatting instructions to the classifiers • Note that the number in CLVList corresponds to the order a classifier is defined. For instance, the third AZList in the previous screen is encoded as CL3List • The HTML Format String text area uses ‘{‘, ‘}’, ‘[‘ and ’]’ characters to indicate conditional elements and metadata reference
Designing a collection (cont.) • The metadata sets interface has similar functions as the metadata sets menu
Building the collection • The Build Collection button builds the current collection and the Preview Collection button opens the current collection in Internet Browser • The import options and build options list item in the left panel provides various options that can be set for Greenstone. Some of them can be useful, such as the gzip flag in the Build options list item which allows the user to store source documents in compressed format in order to conserve space • You can ignore all of these options when building a collection. The choice is yours
