  2. Introduction • What are the choices? • Differences and Similarities between the Interactive Mathematics Program (IMP) and Sequential Courses.

  3. CMP Middle School If 8th Grade Proficiencies not met. Prep Math 1.0 elective credit IMP 1 Extended 1.5 credits Algebra 1 Extended 1.5 credits IMP 2 1.0 credit Geometry 1.0 credit Intermediate Algebra 1.0 credit IMP 3 1.0 credit Algebra 2 1.0 credit IMP 4 1.0 credit IMP Topics 0.5 credit Pre-calculus w/ Trig 1.0 credit Topics 0.5 credit AP Statistics 1.0 credit AP Calculus 1.5 credits

  4. Comparison of Programs • Presentation of Content • Ordering of Content

  5. Presentation of Content • Sequential – Chapters cover a single math concept, with different ways of approaching that concept. • IMP – Thematic units with central problems. Multiple math concepts are covered in each unit addressing the central problem.

  6. Year 1:Pit and Pendulum Unit How long will it take for a 30 foot pendulum to complete one oscillation? • Conducting experiments to collect data • Using mean and standard deviation to analyze data and make conclusions • Finding functions to fit data • Using functions to make predictions

  7. Year 4:High Dive Unit A diving platform is mounted on a Ferris wheel and a pool of water is mounted on a cart moving along the plane of the Ferris wheel. When should the diver be released from the platform in order to land in the pool?

  8. Linear and angular velocity • Modeling periodic motion using trigonometric functions • Projectile motion • Composition of functions • Developing trigonometric identities • Quadratic functions

  9. Ordering of Content • Sequential – Fairly linear. One concept is taught “completely” before moving on to the next. • IMP – Each concept is taught as needed and extended as appropriate as the class moves on to subsequent problems.

  15. Expectations For All Courses • Communication: Students communicate understanding of concepts both verbally and in writing. • Collaboration: Students work in a group environment and present their work to classmates to enhance their learning. • Problem Solving: Problem solving and application of concepts is emphasized.

  16. Businesses are looking for people who can- • Describe, explain, and make sense of complex systems. • Work productively and communicate effectively with teams of diverse specialists • Adapt to rapidly evolving conceptual tools - and insightfully interpret results (Dr. Richard Lesh, Indiana University, 2006)

  17. Data • Standardized Tests • Amount of Math Taken • College Acceptance

  18. College Preparation • Both curriculums prepare motivated students for college entry. • All Colorado universities will require 4 years of mathematics for admission starting with the graduating class of 2010.

  19. Standards • The first two years of each program cover material outlined in the district and state standards for high school mathematics.
