The case for new LTEs • Our debt to the future • Incorporate climate treatments • Replicate geographically • Provide a platform for future research
Learning from Park Grass • Continuity of management is vital • Experiments become more valuable with time • Future uses cannot all be foreseen • Apparent utility will sometimes be zero • Survival requires protection from political whim and scientific fashion • Any new experiment that survives 150y will be celebrated
Aims of the trust • To acquire the ownership, or legally-guaranteed control in perpetuity, of land to be designated ‘Ecological Continuity Reserves’, on which long-term ecological experiments will be conducted. • To provide the infrastructure for establishment and permanent maintenance of experiments on Trust land. • To ensure that experiments are continued indefinitely and that no developments predjudicial to this aim take place. • To facilitate scientific research and ecological monitoring within the Trust’s reserves. • To raise funds for and manage an endowment in order to achieve the Trust’s aims.
Five-phase plan • Refine the scientific objectives of the ECT • Decide issues of land tenure and management • Define criteria for site selection and draw up a short list of experimental sites • Write a draft business plan • Complete the business plan and establish the ECT as a charity.
How you can help • Tell people about the ECT & why it is needed • Point people to the website • Help us contact potential donors • Remember the ECT in your own will!
