PSAT/NMSQT – what is it? • PRELIMINARY SAT / NATIONAL MERIT SCHOLARSHIP QUALIFYING TEST (11TH GRADERS) • MEASURES: Critical Reading, Math Problem Solving, and Writing skills. • PSAT/NMSQT scores are reported on a scale of 20 to 80. In 2009, The average score for 10TH graders was 42 in Critical Reading, 43 in Mathematics, and 41 in Writing Skills. (go for a 50 in each area). • Sat Scores are reported on a scale of 200 to 800. • Minimum college entrance scores are 500 in each area. Alonzo and Tracy Mourning S.H. Student Services

PSAT/NMSQT - When is it? • The PSAT is given once a year- in the middle of October. • M-DCPS covers the cost for all 10th grade students, 9thand 11th grade students must pay a $13.00 fee. • (The top 10 juniors* will receive fee waivers for the PSAT on October 13, 2010.) • Reading: 48 questions - 2 sections of 25 minutes each. • Mathematics: 38 questions – 2 sections of 25 minutes each. • Writing 39 questions – 1 section of 30 minutes. • ATM Tested 525 students last October!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! PSAT/NMSQT RESULTS – how can it help? • INDIVIDUAL Score Reports: have been distributed to the students, help your child interpret their score report. • My College Quick Start™: this free service for students to explore colleges and careers on the college board website. • AP Potential™: this service helps us to identify students who are likely to succeed in AP® courses. • Summary of Answers and Skills: identify the students’ skill strengths and weaknesses. Earning College Credit or Advanced Placement With qualifying exam scores you can earn credit, advanced placement or both at more than 90 percent of colleges and universities in the United States and Canada. Dual Enrollment @ FIU Through our partnership with FIU - this is an opportunity for students to earn high school credits and college credits simultaneously. Grades will become part of permanent high school AND college transcripts. STUDENTS WHO EARN A “C OR LOWER” IN ANY ONE DUAL ENROLLMENT COURSE WILL NOT BE ALLOWED TO CONTIUE PARTICIPATING IN THE DUAL ENROLLMENT PROGRAM. DUAL ENROLLMENT Student Application is available on line: www.fiu.edu/~understu/de/index.html This form must be completed with signatures from the high school EVERY SEMESTER YOU WISH TO TAKE COURSES. SAT – The Scholastic Aptitude Test • Today, the SAT Reasoning Test is the benchmark standardized assessment of the critical reading, mathematical reasoning, and writing skills students have developed over time and that they need to be successful in college. Each year, more than two million students take the SAT. College Entrance Tests and Scores • SAT Minimum of 500 Verbal 500 Math -1000 Total; 1200 for more competitive colleges. • ACT Minimum of 20/21 verbal and 20/21 math (national medians) • Bright Futures Scholarship Program – • 1270 for 100%; 3.5 GPA • 970 for 75%; 3.0 GPA • Gold Seal 880 3.5 GPA Vocational, 3.0 Overall. College Entrance Tests and Scores • As a Concordance score to the FCAT Retakers: after three attempts to obtain a 300 on the FCAT, the State will substitute the following scores for graduation: • SAT: 420 Verbal; 340 Math • ACT: 18 Verbal; 15 Math Alonzo and Tracy Mourning S.H. Student Services
Worksheet Point System A = 4, B = 3, C = 2, D = 1, F =0 Points 10 – 14 = D 15 – 24 = C 25 – 34 = B 35 – 40 = A 10 points = Total points needed to pass an annual course with a “D” 5 points = Total points needed to pass a semester course with a “D” 5 point rule = Students must earn at least 5 points (of the required minimum 10 points) in the 2nd semester.
