European Influence • Hernando De Soto •Discovers Mississippi River for Europeans (1541) •Names it “El Rio de Esipirtu Sancto”-The River of the Holy Spirit • Louis Jolliet & Father Jacques Marquette•travel from French Canada down Mississippi •stopped somewhere in Arkansas • Piasa Legend • Robert Cavelier Suier De La Salle & Henri De Tonty •1682, explored the Mississippi River from Canada and travelled to Gulf of Mexico•claimed Missisippi for French

  4. The Sioux • The Sioux named many of the geographical landmarks we know today • Ne-tongo Big River (Mississippi) • Ne- Shodse Muddy River (Missouri) • Ne- Osho Main River • Ne- Ska White River • Ne- Braska Flat River
