  8. A. Background • During the Cold War the US and Soviet Union had an arms race. • Both sides rapidly built nuclear power plants for energy and weapons.

  9. HEI Chernobyl – nuclear power plant explosion Create this chart in your notebook and complete each column.

  10. CAUSES 1. To rapidly industrialize the Soviet Union built infrastructure quickly and poorly. 2. In 1986 the power plant at Chernobyl in Ukraine exploded.

  11. Causes 3. Nuclear radiation contaminated the environment. Bumper cars at an abandoned amusement park near the power plant.

  13. Map Showing Contaminated Areas The Chernobyl nuclear accident affected a huge area. This map shows areas that have elevated levels of cesium 137 in Northern Europe area, in the years after the Chernobyl accident. READ ONLY

  14. EFFECTS 1. Radiation spread throughout Eurasia and Europe. 2. Ukrainians were forced to migrate, abandon their land and homes. An abandoned school in the city near the plant.

Directions 1. Number in your notebook 1-10. 2. Write a caption that you would put in your Facebook photo album for pictures 1-6.

Google Earth Field Trip • Click on the Novell window at the bottom by the start button. • Open Google Earth • Open the Google Earth Tour titled “chernobyl mine.” • Zoom out and locate the abandoned city Prypiat to the Northeast. Click the blue buttons to check out the pictures.  You must have the Geographic Web layer clicked.  The Chernobyl plant is to the SW of Prypiat.
