A. Background • During the Cold War the US and Soviet Union had an arms race. • Both sides rapidly built nuclear power plants for energy and weapons.
HEI Chernobyl – nuclear power plant explosion Create this chart in your notebook and complete each column.
CAUSES 1. To rapidly industrialize the Soviet Union built infrastructure quickly and poorly. 2. In 1986 the power plant at Chernobyl in Ukraine exploded.
Causes 3. Nuclear radiation contaminated the environment. Bumper cars at an abandoned amusement park near the power plant.
