CONEXPO - CON/AGG 2002 LAS VEGAS • BACKGROUND TO THE SHOW : • ConExpo/ConAgg largest exposition in the Western hemisphere for construction and earthmoving industries. • Started on Tuesday and ran to Saturday. • By Thursday midday, 107 670 visitors had attended the show. • International attendees represented 14% of total attendees. • It takes place every three years. • It rotates with shows in Germany and France. • In 2003 - Intermat show in Paris • In 2004 - Bauma in Munich
CONEXPO - CON/AGG 2002 LAS VEGAS • BACKGROUND TO THE SHOW : (continued) • ConExpo is held in Las Vegas. • Las Vegas is the only city in USA that can host this size show. This years’ show was the biggest ever held in the USA. The previous biggest show was a computer show (100 000 delegates). • There were 75 industry associations at the show.
CONEXPO - CON/AGG 2002 • LAS VEGAS • SHOW SPONSORS WERE : • National Ready Mixed Concrete Association. • National Stone, Sand & Gravel Association. • Association of Equipment Manufacturers • Exhibit space was 1.9m square feet (biggest ever) • 2 450 exhibitors (most ever)
CONEXPO - CON/AGG 2002 • LAS VEGAS • OBJECTIVE OF THE TOUR : • To meet up with National Readymix Associations • To meet up with National Stone, Sand & Gravel Associations. • To meet up with the National Lime Associates. • To visit the show • To make contacts • To learn what is done in the USA which is different • To let others know SA exists and we have industry bodies.

NSSGA : • The Construction industry in USA represents 8% of GDP • Accounts for 5% of total USA employment.Some focus : • Completely automated contractors • Negotiating to win. • Coaching skills for Foreman, Supervisors and Front Line Managers. • International Planning Forum with all Aggregate & Sand Producers

CONEXPO - CON/AGG 2002 LAS VEGAS • Industry has a problem: • Workforce is ageing • People not eager to come into industry • Education system is focussed on paper qualifications • Low financial literacy • Training not keeping up with Technology improvements
CONEXPO - CON/AGG 2002 LAS VEGAS • INFRASTRUCTURE: Congressman: Dan Young - • Chairman Infrastructure/Transportation - U S House of Reps • Damage to roads - not weight of trucks • Stopping and starting is the problem • There should be special lanes for trucks • Concrete is permanent • US has 97 bridges that are falling down
CONEXPO - CON/AGG 2002 LAS VEGAS • Environment issues used to stop building roads • Good roads -makes country strong • Asphalt is not holding up • Lay concrete as base course • Potholes is an asphalt problem • Higher loads - less trucks - less damage • to roads - save fuel
