How does a Trainer make a living? • With Purse Money • Budget and Plan • Some Trainers try to maximize purse $ by: →Owning part of the horses they train →Owning farm/stable →Breeding for racing or sale →Boarding other horses for owners • Each horse = the bottom Line Bob Baffert, one of most successful Thoroughbred Trainers in the World!

Love To Hate The Profession • Since one can not gain education to become a trainer, growing up around horses is the best way to gain entry into the profession. • Working with horses daily and starting to gain experience is key. • Don’t worry…if you want to pursue this career path after school, try to network and get into reputable stable.

  20. Notes • Out of all the professions that are involved with the race track, I chose thoroughbred trainers. I chose this profession because no college classroom education is required, although much education is gained through observations, volunteering, and apprentice type work. I found it to be quite interesting.
