  1. Installation Changes Mastercam X5

  2. Mastercam X5 - Installation With the release of Mastercam X5, CNC Software has moved to a Windows® Compliant software installation. This has resulted in some changes to the historical installation that has been in use over many releases. This move addresses many issues users and IT Managers have experienced over these last few years.

  3. Mastercam X5 - Installation There is a new installation utility that will walk the user through the installation process. The user selects, the installation type, Set-up, Repair, Uninstall or Modify from the radio buttons The next selection determines which products are to be installed. Please note, Art is now a separate installation and will need to be selected.

  4. Mastercam X5 - Installation From the drop down, the user can configure the installation of the product The lower window provides information about the current installation settings. These settings can be modified by clicking the Configure button.

  6. Mastercam X5 - Installation The User License Agreement has been moved into the dialog as well. If you wish to continue the installation the user must agree and Yes to accept the agreement.

  7. Mastercam X5 - Installation After the installation has successfully completed, this window appears. If the installation does not need to be modified in anyway, the user can click exit to exit out of the Set-Up.

  8. Mastercam X5 – Where is it? The new structure as stated at the top, is a Windows® Compliant Installation. What does this means for the End User? The first thing to notice is the actual installation folder is on a 32 bit system C:\Program Files\mcamx5 64 bit system C:\Program Files (x86)\mcamx5

The next thing to notice is the actual user folder is now, For Windows XP Users C:\Documents and Settings\”User Name”\My Documents\my mcamx5 For Vista & Windows 7 Users C:\Users\”User Name”\Documents\my mcamx5 Hint: Shortcuts can be created and placed on the Desktop for quick navigation.

  10. Mastercam X5 – Where is it? The User Folder contain files that the user can create and/or modify. The users Config file is contained in this folder. Users can have separate config files based on separate user logins. As well as any user created files, to include, .nc files, nci files, stl files. This allows the user full rights to files they may edit or create.

The next thing to notice is the new shared folder, For Windows XP Users C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Shared Documents\shared mcamx5 For Vista & Windows 7 Users C:\Users\Public\Documents\shared mcamx5 Hint: Shortcuts can be created and placed on the Desktop for quick navigation.

  12. Mastercam X5 – Where is it? The Shared Folder contain files that All users can use and share. Machine Definitions, Control Definitions, Post Processors, Global Program settings, Tool Libraries, Defaults files, Op Defaults, Editors, Setup Sheets This allows all users full access to files they may to edit or create.

Mastercam X5 – Installation Closing The new installation routine will install X5 into different locations than in the past , this installation takes Mastercam into a Windows® compliant installation. Do not attempt to try to force the installation to create a more “Classic” installation structure. We tried this and it outright fails. In speaking with CNC Software about this change we realize that Mastercam becomes compliant with Industry and moves to Windows® compliance, this new change is something which we will adjust to moving forward. Mastercam X5 introduces a major change to file locations. It is very important that the file paths in the configuration reflect these changes. Re-creating your preferences “from scratch” from within the X5 environment using Mastercam’s default files ensures a smooth update. This really is a good time to start fresh.

  14. Mastercam X5 – Files, Toolbar There are some files that the user will want and need from the previous installation, here we will cover some of what can be moved. Toolbars are something that many users configure for their personal tastes, these .mtb files can be copied to C:\users\”User Name”\my mcamx5\config folder. The config file can then be set to access this file if it does not automatically find and use it.

  15. Mastercam X5 – Update Folder With Update Folder you can convert an entire folder of files to the current version of Mastercam. For example, you can convert all of your tool libraries and/or part file folders in a single operation. It does not matter which Mastercam product you are running or which machine definition is active As of Mastercam X5, a Mastercam version number is appended to most file extensions. In most instances, Mastercam file name extensions are formed by appending a hyphen followed by the Mastercam version. As part of the conversion, Update Folder changes the extensions of the files it updates.

  16. Mastercam X5 – Updating Files You can choose to update specific file types, if needed you can select to update only files from a specific version as well. By selecting the installation folder and clicking the Search Sub-folders switch, when can check the entire folder structure for the selected File Types. All of the file types selected, will be placed in the shared folder under the new file structure using the default settings. If a users files locations are not in standard locations, then the user may have to go through one at a time, based on file type and location.
