About The Secret Life of the American Teenager • The Secret Life of the American Teenager (often shortened to Secret Life) is an American teen drama television series created by Brenda Hampton. It first aired on ABC Family on July 1, 2008 and ran until June 3, 2013. Amy Juergens is the daughter of George Juergens and Anne Scott. She is the older sister of Ashley Juergens and in the second season, the older half-sister of RobieJuergens. During season 1, Amy gives birth to her son, John Juergens, making her a teen mother. The next 4 seasons are all about her struggles with having a baby and going through high school. The main characters are Amy, Ricky, Ben, Adrian and Grace.
Setting • The show was set in Los Angeles, California. The majority of the scenes are set in the high school, the Juergens’ home or the church. The settings are important because this is where the struggles are taken place. The atmosphere it sets is that it’s high school students.
Amy Juergens • Amy Juergens is a 15 year old in High School. She plays the French horn and is the classic "good girl" until she finds out she's pregnant after a one-night-stand with Ricky Underwood at band camp. Before anyone finds out she is pregnant, she begins dating Ben Boykewich. Amy and Ben fall for one another and even though she is pregnant, he does not care. Amy has a baby boy in the season one final, whom her sister names John. • As season two opens, Amy is struggling to be a teenage mother and a student at the same time. She is exhausted most of the time and tries to unload her responsibilities on others. While getting help is fine, being a child herself, she seems to think "help" means "do everything for me." Amy finds out she has to take summer school to complete freshman year and is upset to be stuck at home while Ben goes off to Italy. http://www.imdb.com/character/ch0097416/bio
Ricky Underwood • Ricky is a troubled teenage boy that is trying to be a man in the right ways but also in the wrong. He was a victim of sexual abuse at the hands of his father which lead him to be in foster care and is a student at Grant High. He met Amy at band camp, due to the fact that they are both in the band and that is where he expressed interest in her and their son was conceived, (John). He has expressed on more then one occasion that he is in love with Amy but at the same time said that he was in love with Adrian until he broke if off for good after Adriancheating so many times stating that he wasn't in love with her. Ricky can be your best friend or your worst enemy his parents abandoning him didn't help him much except to give him to more loving and excepting parents. • He recently proposed to Amy and she said yes. Amy and Ricky live together but they had some issues with Adrian trying to steal him. http://www.imdb.com/character/ch0097415/bio
Adrian Lee • Adrian Lee is a sophomore at Grant High, she is a majorette and bed-buddy to Ricky. She lives with her mother, Cindy, who is a flight attendant and therefore is constantly away from home, which leaves Adrian to have time with Ricky. In the episode "Slice of Life", she tracks down her father, who had been a missing part in her life because he and her mother "had an agreement". She is in love with Ricky, although he does not love her back. • Her and Ben Boykewich accidently got pregnant when Adrian thought Ricky was cheating on her with Amy. She did it for revenge. Ben and her were engaged and got married but the baby died. They split up. http://www.imdb.com/character/ch0099914/bio
Teen Issues • This show addresses the struggle of teen pregnancy. In 2011, a total of 329,797 babies were born to women aged 15–19 years, for a live birth rate of 31.3 per 1,000 women in this age group. These statistics are for the United States of America. Basically the show is showing how Amy handles a baby and school. It is more realistic and shows how much she struggles with it. The show is based off real teens.
Viewers Statistics • Adults 18-34 approximately 681,000, Women 18-34 approximately 581,000, Women 18-49 approximately 830,000, Viewers 12-34 approximately 885,000 and Females 12-34 approximately 776,000. I believe this show is popular because it is cliché. Basically it is popular because the viewers half know what to expect and some of it could be happening in their lives and they would like to know how to handle it. I liked it because it was very interesting and had you on the edge of your seat, waiting to see what would happen next. Sometimes they would leave a cliff hanger and you would have to wait till the next week just to see it. That is also what I think would have helped to keep viewers.
