The Story Sober living houses (SLHs) are alcohol and drug free living environments for people attempting to abstain from alcohol and drugs. They are not funded by state or local governments, & the residents pay for costs. The philosophy of recovery emphasizes 12-step group attendance and peer support. Moos and Moos (2006) found that social support was crucial in establishing sustained abstinence. For the past 5 years, sober living homes have been at war with Los Angeles City Council. The “Community Care Facilities Ordinance” purpose is to eliminate Sober Living Homes in L.A. SLHs need more participation from its members to obey the policies that the Los Angeles County Sober Living Coalition expects them to abide by. It is important that all homes attend coalition meetings and make it a requirement to be a member of the coalition so they are not having these issues in their respective counties. This is already being done in San Bernardino and Riverside Counties.
