Cleveland Heights High School: Creating the Future October 14, 2014 Presented by: Andrea Celico, Ph.D.
Purpose of Meeting • History and rationale • Future of Cleveland Heights High School: Short-term and Long-term • Planning process • Your suggestions: table top activity • Next steps
Elimination of small schools • Review: • Achievement data • Staff survey • Parent survey • Small schools intention was to be a structure for supporting mission and vision (inception 2004) Pathways and PASSAGE • What we found: • True “small schools:” Costly and difficult to maintain “purity” • Problematic with scheduling; programs compete; students’ courses and extracurricular choices affected • Resulted in majority of courses having mix of students from more than one school
Academic Achievement: • OGT scores remained stagnant or declined from 2004-2012 • Decrease in Performance Index • Decrease in percentage of indicators
Surveys Parents: • 141 responses • Many positive remarks about relationships, academic choices, personalization, choices • Dissatisfaction about not getting first choice of courses or school Staff: • 64 responses • Felt not enough progress was made around relationships, college/career readiness • Concerns that small schools didn’t prepare students for tests • Overwhelming response stated that small schools are confusing and create some sense of inequity among schools • Teachers felt there weren’t enough resources provided
RESULT After 10 years of trying, the small school structure is not getting the results we need for our students.
Projected Timelines • 2014-2015 small schools continue (planning year) • 2015-2017 one high school in swing space • 2017-2018 one high school in new school
The Future of Heights High (2-3 years) • While at Wiley swing space: • Focus on teaching and learning • Improve instructional practices • Focus on ensuring a safe and secure school with an emphasis on instruction • Preserve successful high school tenets: • Technology and blended learning • Partnerships with universities • Career and Technical Education • Advanced Placement Courses • Arts and athletics • Explore instructional programs for 2017-2018
Looking ahead 3-5 years: The Future of Heights High • One high school • Preservation of instructional practices that work • Wide array of options for students • Innovative • Preservation of relationships • College and career readiness • Problem and inquiry-based learning (project labs; mini auditorium) • Opportunities for students (post-secondary, CTE, Arts, etc.)
Planning and programming: • Teacher and staff input • Community, staff and student sessions • Building visits • Preservation of strategies “that work” • Great opportunities for innovation; refashion the high school • Learn from our experience planning for small schools; be successful in our planning
Next Steps • Gather input • Visit buildings/explore models and programs • Planning document • Planning meetings • Next 10 months…opportunity to launch CH-UH HS dedicated to helping every student achieve • Capitalize on strengths as we design the new Heights High
