The MSEE Program:Three Options • Thesis • 8 courses (3 hrs each) • 6 hours research (EE 697) • 2 hours grad seminar (EE 796) • thesis + oral defense • Problem-report • 10 courses (3 hrs each) • 3 hours research (EE 697) • 2 hours grad seminar (EE 796) • problem report + oral defense • Coursework only • 11 courses (3 hrs each) • 2 hours grad seminar

  3. Course Requirements • No more than three courses can be at the 400-level. • The remainder must be 500-level or above. • Every student needs to pick a major emphasis area. • Take the required course for the area. • Three total courses from the area. • Minor emphasis areas • Thesis students: One minor area. • Other students: Two minor areas. • To minor in an area, you must take the area’s required course. • Plan ahead … not all minor area courses are offered every semester. • See EE graduate program handbook.

Emphasis Areas and Their Required Courses • Electronics and Photonics • EE 550: Advanced Semiconductor Electronics • Software Engineering • CPE 684: Advanced Real-Time Systems • CPE 585: Concurrent Programming in Java • Communications and Signal Processing • EE 513: Stochastic Systems Theory • Control Systems • EE 515: Linear Control Systems • Digital Systems • CS 555: Advanced Computer Systems Architecture • CPE 670: Switching Circuit Theory I • Power Systems • EE 531: Advanced Electrical Machinery • EE 533: Computer Applications in Power System Analysis

  5. Biometrics and Information Assurance • It is also possible to pick “Biometrics and Information Assurance” as you major area. • Must take 5 required courses. • Still need to satisfy minor area requirements. • See departmental handbook. • You can’t minor in this area.

  6. Plan of Study • A Plan of Study must be completed: • Full-time students: By the end of the second semester. • Part-time: By the time 12 credit hours are completed. • Students may not register for research (EE 697) until their plan of study is completed. • Committee composition: • At least three members. • Majority, including chair, must have regular graduate faculty status. • Recommended that one be from outside dept.

  7. Grade Requirements • Courses with a grade below C will not count towards the degree. • GPA needs to be 3.0 or higher. • During the final defense, not more than one unfavorable vote by the committee.

  8. The Ph.D. Program • Committee Composition: • At least 5 members. • The majority, including chair, must be regular graduate faculty. • One must be from outside the department. • Course requirements: • Only 500-level and above may count. • 18 hours of courses beyond M.S. • 24 hours of research (EE/CPE 797) • Should have some courses from a minor area.

  9. Ph.D. Examinations • Qualifying exam • Written • Two-parts taken on same day. • Morning: is on undergraduate classes • Afternoon: is on graduate classes • Should take in first year. • Allowed two attempts • Candidacy exam • Two-parts • Problems assigned by committee. • Dissertation proposal • Oral defense. • Final dissertation defense • No more than 5 years after entering candidacy.

  10. ETD • Electronic Thesis and Dissertation. • The University requires that all theses, problem reports, and dissertations must be submitted to the University’s digital archive. • See link on the course webpage. • Look through the ETD site to get an idea what an acceptable thesis/dissertation looks like! • The department no longer accepts a hard copy of thesis, dissertations, and problem reports.
