English and Math courses • If you are not taking English and/or Math in your first quarter, you need to take English and/or math in your second quarter. WHY? • No matter which college/university and what major you choose, you will need English and Math. • There are many classes that require ENGL& 101 first. • Psychology, Communication, HIST&241, etc. • Most of the Science Sequences require completion of MATH 098 or higher.

Common misunderstanding • Your transcript is a permanent record. Your grades cannot be erased or replaced even when a course is repeated. • Having multiple “R” (repeats) on your transcripts would not impress universities/colleges.
Credit evaluation Is necessary when • You have college credits at another college or university AND • You are planning to earn an associate degree at NSCC Process: • Order official transcripts from each college or university attended, to be sent directly (electronically if possible) to ARRC. (If you’ve received official transcripts, please do NOT open them) • Check w/ ARRC to verify transcripts have arrived. • Submit the Application for Evaluation of Incoming Credits form to ARRC.

How to find a major’s pre-requisites? • Research the website of the college/university that you are interested in. • Some colleges/universities have their majors’ prerequisites information on their website. http://admit.washington.edu/Admission/Transfer/APW • If you cannot find a major’s prerequisites on the college/university’s website, contact their admissions office. Research major pre-requisites

(cont.) • Let them know who you are: • Your legal name • You are an international student. • You are studying at NSCC in WA. • Let them know about your interest • You are interested in their XXX major. • Ask for information • You would like to know a major’s pre-requisites. • If they do not have a specific set of pre-requisites, ask for their suggested courses. What else to take into account when creating your educational plan
Application & Transfer Timing • When to start applying for universities /colleges? • Most of the students start applying for universities/colleges while they are still working on their associate degree • Application deadlines • A college/university may have a separate application deadline for international students - often earlier than domestic students • Which year & quarter to transfer? • How long it takes to complete your associate degree • How long it takes to completed your major prerequisites • Are you applying to a semester system school or a quarter system school? • Do the schools of your interest accept international students every term, or once a year? Create your educational plan
When to take TOEFL/IELTS • TOEFL • http://www.ets.org/ • IELTS • http://www.ielts.org/ • Test dates and locations are limited. • Spaces fill quickly, especially during November and December. TOEFL recommends “you register 3 to 4 months before your desired test date to reserve your seat. Your test date should be 2 to 3 months before your earliest admissions application deadline.” Create your educational plan
When to graduate Once you complete your degree, you have 3 options: • Transfer to a university/college within 60 days upon completion of your degree. • If you graduate in Winter quarter, you must start studying at a university in Spring quarter of the same year. • Only exception is – if you graduate in Spring quarter, you can start studying at a university either in Sum or Fall quarter of the same year. • OPT (optional practical training) Talk to the IP office • Go back to your home country Create your educational plan

This is my last quarter at NSCC. I have not applied for any universities. Can I take extra classes after I complete all my associate degree requirements in order to stay in the US? No.
I have lots of major pre-requisites. Some of them are offered only once a year. I need to take care of those, even after I complete my associate degree requirements!! Still, NO. You cannot continue taking classes once you complete your degree requirements.
What if I don’t tell the IP office that I can complete my degree now & apply for graduating for a later quarter? Still, NO.
