Have you used full stops properly? Literacy Focus of the Term A common mistake people make is to join two sentences together with a comma instead of using a connective, full stop or semi-colon. This is called comma splicing. XMy sister is allowed to stay up until 10pm, she is older than me. It is incorrect to use a comma here as both statements make sense on their own. They are both complete sentences. Instead of using a comma you should: Use a full stop: My sister is allowed to stay up until 10pm. She is older than me. Use a connective: My sister is allowed to stay up until 10pm as she is older than me. Use a semi colon: My sister is allowed to stay up until 10pm; she is older than me. Full stops are needed to end a sentence that is a statement.
