History Standard SS8H8 The student will analyze the important events that occurred after World War I and their impact on Georgia. • Describe the impact of the boll weevil and drought on Georgia. • Explain economic factors that resulted in the Great Depression. • Discuss the impact of the political career of Eugene Talmadge. • Discuss the effect of the New Deal in terms of the impact of the Civilian Conservation Corps, Agricultural Adjustment Act, rural electrification, and Social Security.
Boll Weevil & Drought • Boll Weevil • Moved from Mexico and throughout the southeast. • Arrived in GA around 1915 decreased cotton production • 5.2 million acres in 1914 2.6 million acres in 1923 • Worst droughts in Georgia • 1924 – 1928 • 1925 “The year you could walk across the Chattahoochee” • 1930 – 1935 • On the positive side, the drought slowed the destruction caused by the boll weevil • On the negative side, both the drought and the boll weevil pushed GA into an economic depression years before the Great Depression began
Eugene Talmadge • Served 3 terms as Commissioner of Agriculture • Served 3 terms as Governor • Segregationist • Caused the University System of Georgia to lose accreditation • Opposed to (against) the New Deal Programs
